Paton Churdan rallied with a dominant 3rd quarter, then held off a late surge by Storm Lake St Mary’s to earn their 3rd win of the season. The Rockets grabbed the early lead but didn’t score for nearly the rest of the 1st quarter. The offense found a its rhythm in the 3rd quarter as they went on a 5-0 run to grab the lead. They extended the lead to seven early in the 4th quarter before Storm Lake St Mary’s pulled within one in the closing minutes. Kaliyah Minnihan gave the Rockets some separation and Ella Tasler sealed it with a free throw with just over 0:02 remaining.

Kaliyah Minnihan drained a three from the left corner on the Rockets opening possession after Alivya Smith made a steal and Paton Churdan led 3-0. Storm Lake St Mary’s went on a 7-0 run, building a 7-3 lead late in the 1st quarter before Ella Tasler scored to make it 7-4 to end the 1st quarter. The Panthers scored to start the 2nd quarter but Kaliyah Minnihan hit a jumper and Edynn Smith drained a three tying the game at 9. The Panthers responded with a three and Kaliyah Minnihan scored to pull the Rockets within 12-11 at half.

Storm Lake St Mary’s edged ahead 15-11 to start the 3rd and led 16-13 after a bucket by Kaliyah Minnihan, who kept the Rockets in the game early. Edynn Smith took over from there. She scored 11 of the next 13 Rockets points, giving them a 26-19 lead early in the 4th quarter. Kaliyah Minnihan tied the game at 16 and then Smith hit a pair of three’s and a bucket to start the 4th. Holly Miller added a nice bank shot from the right side, keeping the Rockets up 28-22 and Chloe Happe had a free throw. Edynn Smith pushed the Rockets lead to 31-24 midway through the 4th but Storm Lake St Mary’s went on a 6-0 run and trailed 31-30. Kaliyah Minnihan extended the lead to three on a nifty pass and layup with around a minute to go. Storm Lake St Mary’s missed a couple 3’s late and Ella Tasler drained a free throw with 0:02.1 left to seal the win.

Edynn Smith had a strong all-around game, leading the Rockets with 16-points and 9 rebounds while adding a team high 3 steals. Kaliyah Minnihan was crucial for the Rockets early and late, finishing with 13-points and 2 steals. Ella Tasler added 7 rebounds and 4 assists and Chloe Happe had 5 rebounds.

The Rockets improved to 3-16 and will head to Woodbine on Friday.
