Carroll Girls had their final matchup before the break on the road at Winterset on Friday night. The Tigers came in at 3-3, while Winterset came in at 2-4. This was a conference matchup, with the winner moving up and the loser sliding down. There was significant back-and-forth over a quarter-by-quarter breakdown. The Tigers broke out in the 1st, posting a strong defensive quarter to take a 10-3 lead after 1. In the 2nd, the game flipped with the Huskies offense coming out to outscore the Tigers 14-7 to tie it up 17-17 at the half. The 3rd was an absolute offensive masterclass, as both teams scored double digits, with Winterset getting 20 and Carroll 17, to go up 3 heading into the 4th. It was tight down the stretch, but Carroll was able to squeak out what they needed to send it to overtime. The Tigers were unable to get it done, as Winterset pulled off a 57-55 victory. The Tigers fall to 3-4.

Coon Rapids-Bayard girls hosted Woodbine in a Rolling Valley conference matchup. CRB came in at 3-2 on the season in what is their final game before the break. Woodbine came in at 2-5. The Crusaders and Tigers played a very close game early. It was back-and-forth to start, but CRB jumped out to an 11-6 lead after 1. In the 2nd quarter, the Crusaders once again shot the ball very well and defended even better, forcing plenty of turnovers. The Crusaders led 24-12 at the halftime break. The 3rd was the Crusaders flexing their defensive strengths. They sat in a 2-3 most of the game and ran a tight press in the backcourt, which forced the Woodbine guards into a position they weren’t ready for. The Crusaders held the Tigers to one 3-pointer in the 3rd to pick up the 36-15 lead after 3. In the 4th, Woodbine played their most complete quarter as CRB had their starters pulled late and gave their young pieces a chance to shine. They picked up the 50-33 win at home to head into the break at 4-2.

IKM-Manning hosted Treynor in a Western Iowa Conference matchup on Friday evening. The Wolves faced off with one of the top teams in the WIC and their class. The Wolves started off slow, and Treynor did Treynor things as they managed a 23-8 lead after 1. In the 2nd, the Wolves had their small win, as it was a 1-point quarter, but they still found themselves down at the break. In the 3rd, Treynor would once again come out firing as they would get another 20-point quarter for a big lead after 3. Treynor closed out the game with a 73-42 win as the Wolves fell to 4-3 after tonight.

Exira-EHK played an early game with CAM at 12:30 this afternoon. The Exira-EHK girls came in ranked 8th in 1A. CAM came in at 3-2 and was looking to knock off the #1 in the Rolling Valley. It was back and forth early as Exira-EHK jumped out to a 7-2 lead before CAM came back to make it 10-10 after 1. In the 2nd, CAM had the lead at 15-14 before Exira-EHK got it back at 19-17, then took the lead at the break, 24-20. The 3rd was where Exira-EHK made their money as they would hit a layup and freethrow to go up 27-24 before a 15-6 run ended the Spartans up 42-30. In the 4th, the Spartans did the same and held their lead all the way through to pick up a 57-42 win on the road. Taryn Petersen led all scorers with 21.

East Sac fell behind early, but not by much, trailing 12-9 after the 1st. East Sac’s girls leaped the 2nd as they would double up GTRA with an 18-9 quarter for a 27-21 lead at the half. East Sac once again would lead after 3, this time 42-35. GTRA would mount their comeback in the 4th as they would take it into ot tied at 49-49. East Sac would fall 59-55 in OT to fall to 3-4 on the season.

South Central Calhoun hosted a ranked conference opponent in Emmetsburg on Friday night. The Titans came in at 2-5 while the E-Hawks at 6-1. South Central Calhoun struggled with the pressure and the speed at which Emmetsburg had played until this point. The E-Hawks play a very quick and very hard defensive set and want to speed up the opposing offense. This is one of the better teams that the Titans will see all season as they would fall 52-8 at home and fall to 2-6 on the season. Macie Dorman would lead the Titans with 6 points. Sadie Wheelock led in rebounds with 5. The Titans were without arguably their best player as Blair Schleisman was not there tonight.

Paton Churdan started quickly, looking for their second straight win but Glidden Ralston settled down defensively in the 2nd quarter, taking control on their way to their 4th win of the season. The Wildcats pressure defense began to create turnovers, allowing them to get out and score on the break. Olivia Squibb was a big part of that run in the 2nd quarter.
Alivya Smith scored the first bucket as Paton Churdan pushed the lead to 6-0 with Edynn Smith adding a bucket and Kaliyan Minnihan hitting a pair of free throws. Olivia Squibb stopped the run with a basket and Kassidy Wenck cut it to 6-4. Kaliyah Minnihan added two more free throws before Chloe Peters made a free throw and a runner in the lane and the Wildcats were down 8-7. They grabbed their first lead on a Olivia Squibb bucket and led 11-8 at the end of the 1st quarter on a steal and layup by Squibb. Ella Tasler scored to pull Paton Churdan within 11-10 but the Wildcats went on a 10-0 run to stretch their lead to 21-10. Kassidy Wenck, Allison Snyder and Jenna Subert all scored in the run before Olivia Squibb added back-to-back baskets. Ella Tasler ended the run for the Rockets but Glidden Ralston took a 27-13 lead into halftime.
Alivya Smith scored for the Rockets to start the 3rd quarter and Edynn Smith hit a free throw to pull them within 29-16. The Wildcats responded with an 11-0 run with Karigan Wenck starting it with a bucket. Jenna Subbert, Allison Snyder and Olivia Squibb all scored as the Wildcats went up 40-16. Jenna Subbert hit a pair of free throws late in the 3rd and the Wildcats led 48-20 heading to the 4th quarter. Both teams went deep into the benches in the 4th quarter as the Wildcats went up 60-25 on a pair of free throws by Kate Bergmeier.
Olivia Squibb led the Wildcats with 10 points and 6 steals. Allison Snyder had 13 points and 10 rebounds with Kassidy Wenck adding 10 rebounds. Jenna Subbert finished with 9 points and 4 steals and Chloe Peters had 8 points and 5 rebounds.
Ella Tasler and Kaliyah Minnihan both had 6 points for Paton Churdan, Chloe Happe added 5 points and 5 assists off the bench. Edynn Smith had a team high 7 rebounds and Alivya Smith had 6 rebounds.
The Wildcats move to 4-2 and will travel to Greene County on Saturday. Paton Churdan falls to 1-6 and will host Woodbine on January 6th.
