Kuemper At Carroll

Carroll earned their third straight win over Kuemper, using an outstanding defensive performance in the 2nd half while hitting several clutch shots in the 4th quarter. Kuemper was strong on defense, holding Carroll to 41-points and rebounded the ball well. Both teams struggled from the free throw line with Kuemper going 5-13 and Carroll finishing 8-18. Carroll and Kuemper had a stretch in the 2nd quarter where they both shot well from three but neither team finished well from deep, as both defenses created a lot of pressure on the outside shot. Kuemper finished 3-15 from deep and Carroll went 5-21 with Jersey Sporrer hitting three for Carroll. The game featured four lead changes and three ties with Carroll taking the lead for good at 29-28 early in the 4th quarter.

Ali Kock had a pair of offensive rebounds and putbacks to open the game was Carroll led 4-0. Kaylie Simons put Kuemper on the board as both teams were attacking the lane and rim early. A 5-0 run by Elsa Tiefenthaler in the 1st quarter gave Kuemper their first lead at 7-5. Bella Lu tied it for Carroll but Morgan Masching gave Kuemper a 9-7 lead at the end of the 1st quarter. The Knights looked like they would pull away in the 2nd quarter, building a 18-10 lead with Elsa Tiefenthaler getting to the rim. She scored four straight, making it 13-7. Ali Kock scored inside for Carroll but Addy Anthofer answered with a bucket and Kaylie Simons drilled a three to put Kuemper up 18-10. Carroll responded with Jersey Sporrer hitting a three and Sadie Kelly following it up with a three, making it 18-16. Charlotte Hackfort hit a three for Kuemper, giving the Knights a 21-16 lead but Bella Lu answered with a Tigers three, pulling them within 21-19. Elsa Tiefenthaler pushed it to 23-19 at half for Kuemper.

Alivia Schenkelberg started the 2nd half with a bucket but Chloe Kock heated up for Carroll, scoring four in a row to pull them within 25-24. Jersey Sporrer put Carroll up for the first time since they led 5-4, hitting a wing three, making it 27-25 Tigers. Alivia Schenkelberg tied it for Kuemper and Morgan Masching gave the Knights a 28-27 lead to end the 3rd quarter. Bella Lu scored to start the 4th quarter and Jersey Sporrer added a three to push the Tigers lead to 32-28, matching their largest lead to that point. Chloe Kock extended the Tigers lead to 36-30 but Addy Anthofer answered with a three and Kuemper cut it to 36-35 with a Elsa Tiefenthaler basket. Kaylie Simons tied it at 36 with a free throw but Ali Kock put Carroll up 38-36. Chloe Kock added a free throw and Analia Ayala added a pair of free throws. Kuemper had a couple chances late to tie or cut into the deficit but Carroll held on for a 41-36 win.

Bella Lu, Jersey Sporrer and Ali Kock led Carroll with 9-points each with Ali adding 9 rebounds and Lu having 5 rebounds and Sporrer 4 rebounds. Lu added a tremendous defensive effort in the 2nd half, holding Elsa Tiefenthaler to 2-point in the 2nd half. Chloe Kock had 8 points and 9 rebounds while blocking 5 shots. Analia Ayala added 8 rebounds.

Elsa Tiefenthaler had 13-points for Kuemper along with 5 rebounds. Alivia Schenkelberg added 4-ponits and 8 rebounds, Kaylie Simons scored 6 points, Addy Anthofer finished with 5-points and 5 rebounds and Morgan Masching had 5 rebounds.

Carroll moves to 2-0 and will host Carlisle on Friday on KCIM. Kuemper sits at 1-1 and will entertain Denison Schleswig on Friday on KIKD.

The Spartans jumped out early, creating easy opportunities on the offensive end, helping them take a 26-2 lead at the end of the 1st quarter. Ar-We-Va settled in over the final three quarters, scoring double figures in the 3rd and nearly scoring double figures in the 2nd and 4th quarters. The Spartans were consistent over the final three quarters, with three girls scoring in double figures. Jaelynn Petersen paced Exira-EHK with 21-points, with Taryn Petersen adding 18-points and Harlow Miller adding 14-points. Gabbie Hundling had a second straight strong game for Ar-We-Va, leading them with 12-points, 5 rebounds and 3 steals. Mara Obrecht had 6 points and Hallie McCollough went for 6-points and 4 rebounds. Vivian Blackford added 5 rebounds.

The Spartans are 1-1 overall and head to Boyer Valley on Friday. Ar-We-Va falls to 0-2 and will entertain Glidden Ralston on KKRL on Friday.

Glidden Ralston earned a nice bounce back win, knocking off Woodbine at home on Tuesday, taking control in the 2nd half to pull away for a comfortable win. The Wildcats built a lead in the 1st quarter, using strong defensive pressure to lead 17-12 heading into the 2nd quarter. Woodbine battled back as neither team shot it well in the 2nd quarter. Glidden Ralston clung to a 22-19 lead at half. The game swung in the 3rd with the Wildcats defense clamping down, holding the Tigers to 4-points, helping them build a 39-23 lead entering the final stanza. They kept the pressure up in the 4th quarter, rolling to a 52-30 win.

Chloe Peters led the Wildcats with 17-points to go with 4 steals. Jenna Subbert added 14-points with 6 steals, Kassidy Wenck had 9-points and 6 steals with 2 blocked shots.

Glidden Ralston improved to 1-1 overall and will travel to Ar-We-Va on KKRL on Friday.

IKM-Manning had a strong defensive performance and shot the ball well inside, hitting 48% from 2-point range. The defense had 13 steals and deflected 28 balls, keeping the Trojans from getting into an offensive rhythm. That helped jump start the offense with IKM-Manning building a 21-5 lead at the end of the 1st quarter. Tri Center chipped away at the Wolves lead in the 2nd quarter and trailed by 9-points at half. The Wolves were sharp the 2nd half, holding Tri Center to 10-point while scoring 22-points themselves in the 3rd quarter alone. They had a nice inside-outside mix with Anna Stangl leading them with 22-points and Keagan Eischeid adding 20-points. The Wolves rolled to their first win of the season.

Anna Stangl added 5 rebounds and 3 assists to her 22-points. Keagan Eischeid had 7 rebounds and 3 steals with 20-points. Karlee Arp had 5 assists, Addisyn Bandow added 3 steals, Ella Langel pulled down 8 rebounds and Kadynce Ketcham finished with 9 rebounds.

The Wolves sit 1-1 and will Panorama on Thursday on KKRL.

East Sac nearly won their season opener, playing well in the 1st half to lead 21-15 at half but Woodbury Central rallied in the 2nd half to top the Raiders by seven. The Raiders struggled from the floor but rebounded the ball well, pulling down 9 offensive rebounds and 29 rebounds overall. Their defense created problems for the Wildcats, holding them to 43-points. Sarah Bontrager led a strong defensive effort on the perimeter with 6 steals, helping them have 15 steals as a team. Jordin Carroll, Reese Aschinger and Scottie Eichhorn were strong in the paint with all three having 2 blocks. The offense cooled off for the Raiders in the 2nd half, scoring 15-points while the Wildcats found some comfort offensively with 16-points in the 3rd quarter to lead 31-29 heading into the 4th quarter.

Reese Aschinger led the Raiders with 14-points, adding 2 blocks, Sarah Bontrager had 13-points and 6 steals. Miranda Gerdes and Wendie Veit both had 8 rebounds, Jordin Carroll had  5 steals and 2 blocks.

The Raiders fell to 0-1 and will host South Central Calhoun on Friday.

South Central Calhoun had two players in double figures but struggled on the offensive end, scoring in single digits in the first-three quarters, falling 57-37 to South Hamilton. The defense was solid, holding the Hawks to 13-points in both the 1st and 2nd quarters, trailing 26-16 at half. South Hamilton opened their lead in the 3rd and then held off the Titans in the 4th quarter, when they had their best offensive quarter.

Blair Schleisman had 20-points with Macie Dorman had 13-points and 7 rebounds. Sadie Wheelock added 7 rebounds.

The Titans are 0-2 and travel to East Sac on Friday.

It was a tough season opener for Paton Churdan on Tuesday as the offense struggled and Boyer Valley was able to get out and run early, building a 31-5 lead at the end of the 1st quarter. The Rockets were better on defense the rest of the game. Ella Tasler hit a bucket in the  1st half and Alivya Smith added a 3 in the 1st quarter. They trailed 40-5 at half. Isabelle Rice and Maggie Reed both made a three in the 2nd half for the Rockets points.

Paton Churdan opens the season 0-1 and will travel to Coon Rapids Bayard on Friday.
