Kuemper battled hard but saw their season come to an end in the Class 3A Semifinals on Wednesday. Kuemper used a 7-0 run to win set one and led midway through set two before Assumption went on an 8-0 run to grab control of the set and match. Assumption was able to take advantage of their height in the middle and fixed some early serve receive issues. Kuemper did a really nice job against the Assumption serve and attacked their block early. Assumption used small runs in sets three and four to build a lead Kuemper wasn’t able to battle back from.
Assumption led 2-0 early in set one but Brianna Wittrock got Kuemper on the board with a kill as Kuemper tied it at 2, 3 and four on a kill by Addy Anthofer. Kuemper took a 6-4 lead but Assumption rallied and went up 7-6. Assumption built a 10-7 and 13-9 lead before Kuemper bounced back. Brianna Wittrock had back-to-back kills, followed by a pair of kills by Kolbi Peter and a kill from Addy Anthofer, tying the set at 14. Kuemper used a 7-0 run with an ace from Brianna Wittrock putting them up 18-14. Kuemper pulled away and Brianna Wittrock ended the set with a kill.
Kolbi Peter tied set two at 1 with a kill and Elsa Tiefenthaler gave them a 5-4 lead with a kill. Mariah Heuton kept them in front with a kill before Assumption scored a pair of points, going up 7-6. Brianna Wittrock and Addy Anthofer had back-to-back kills as Kuemper hung close, tying it at 10 and taking an 11-10 lead. Addy Anthofer stretched it to 12-10 and Kolbi Peter had a kill, stretching the lead to 14-10. Assumption called timeout before answering with a 8-0 run to grab the lead for good. Zoe Brunning cut it to 22-17 but Assumption won set two 25-17.
The third set went back and forth early with ties at 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 and four lead changes during that stretch. Assumption went ahead 6-5 and used back-to-back aces to stretch their lead to 10-5. Kuemper rallied with a Zoe Brunning kill, followed by back-to-back aces from Addy Anthofer, cutting it to 11-9. A 6-2 run by Assumption put them in control of the set and they went on to will 25-17.
Kuemper led 3-0 in set two and Addy Anthofer gave them a 4-1 lead with another kill. Assumption tied it with a 4-1 run but Mariah Heuton put Kuemper up 6-5 with a kill. Another 5-0 run by Assumption gave them the lead for good at 10-6. Kuemper kept it close for a while with Mariah Heuton and Addy Anthofer with back-to-back kills, pulling with 11-9 and Addy Anthofer pulled them within 13-11 with a kill. Assumption used a 3-0 run and then outscored Kuemper 9-5 down the stretch with Addy Anthofer and Mariah Heuton each having a kill during the stretch.
Addy Anthofer led Kuemper with 11 kills, adding 10 digs and 3 aces. Kolbi Peter added 8 kills and Mariah Heuton adding 7 kills. Kaylie Simons was all over the court, ending with 19 digs and 5 assists. Elsa Tiefenthaler finished with 27 assists and 19 digs with Mia Milligan adding 10 digs.
Kuemper ends their season at 32-3.
