Brincks Exteriors Sports Report: Carroll Earns First Win, Holding Off Humboldt

Carroll held off a late Humboldt rally to earn their first win of the season. The Tigers led 34-20 with 5:37 remaining but the Wildcats stormed back with a pair of touchdowns in the final 2:21 and had a chance to win the game with a 2-point conversion. The Tigers defense held firm with Lincoln Burke forcing the runner back inside and Quinten Polking and Gavin Holt making the stop short of the goal line. Lincoln Burke recovered the onside kick with 0:28 left to secure the win. Carroll controlled the ball on offense most of the game with a power running game. Humboldt scored quick on nearly all of their scoring drives.

Humboldt got on the board first, taking the opening drive 65-yards for a touchdown in 7-plays. Cash McIntire scored on a 10-yard run, moments after they completed a pass to Valley Davis, who made a great diving catch. Carroll responded with a great drive. They marched down the field in nearly 8:00, going 80-yards in 12 plays, scoring on a 2-yard run by Michael Rowedder. The Tigers tied the game at 7 with 1:08 left in the quarter. After pair of punts, Ty Muhlbauer made a great interception, tipping the ball into the air and coming down with it at the Carroll 47-yard line. Camden King put the Tigers ahead four plays later, scoring on a 4-yard run, making 14-7 with 0:43. Humboldt responded quickly with Jackson Flaherty hitting Cash McIntire for a 39-yard touchdown, tying the game at 14 at half.

Carroll got the ball to start the 2nd half, starting at the Humboldt 22-yard line after a great return by Treyvin Childress. Adam Malik capped the 5-play drive with a 6-yard run and Carroll led 21-14. Quinten Polking intercepted Flaherty on the Wildcats first possession of the 2nd half, the second of four Carroll interceptions. The Tigers took advantage of starting at the Wildcats 34-yard line and Kieran Polking booted a 40-yard field goal, making 24-14 with 1:50 left in the 3rd quarter. Humboldt answered quickly with Jackson Flaherty rambling 73-yards off the left side, cutting the Tigers lead to 24-20 with 1:33 left in the 3rd quarter. The Tigers scored again, driving from their own 20 in 11 plays, ending with another 40-yard field goal from Kieran Polking, extending the Tigers lead to 27-20. Landon Petersen picked off Humboldt, setting Carroll up at the Wildcats 42-yard line. Adam Malik  scored his second touchdown, a 24-yard line run, pushing the lead to 34-20 with 5:37 left. The Tigers appeared to seal the game when Mac Collison picked up their fourth interception of the game with 4:12 left. The Tigers went three and out for the first time in the game and Humboldt took advantage, scoring with 2:21 left on a 2-yard run by Cash McIntire. Th Wildcats recovered the on-side kick at their own 47-yard line with 2:17 left. They moved down the field, throwing the ball, benefiting from several Carroll penalties, setting themselves up for a 1-yard run by Jackson Flaherty. They went for two, too win the game but the Tiges made the stop with Lincoln Burke, Quinten Polking and Gavin Holt all a part of the stop. Carroll held on to win 34-33 after Lincoln Burke recovered the onside kick with 0:28 left.

Adam Malik ran for 111-yards and a pair of touchdowns for Carroll. Camden King had 79-yards rushing with a touchdown and Michael Rowedder had 32-yards and a touchdown.

Carroll moves to 1-2 and will face Lewis Central on the road, wrapping up non-district play on KIKD 106.7.
