Gilbert scored late to win a matchup of two teams that want to physically pound you with their run game and defense. Neither team was able to stretch the lead beyond one score as the game swayed back and forth. Carroll ate up most of the 1st quarter on their opening possession before scoring to start the 2nd quarter. They had the ball at the Gilbert 1-yard line to start the 2nd quarter but weren’t able to punch it in. Kieran Polking kicked a 23-yard field goal with 11:08 left in the half, putting Carroll up 3-0. Gilbert responded with a long drive, establishing their running game. They scored on a 3-yard run by Ethan Rash to lead 7-3 with 5:38 left in the half. Carroll’s offense responded quickly with Kieran Polking scoring on a 10-yard run with 3:29 left in the half and Carroll led 14-9. The Tigers took advantage of good field position as Gilbert muffed a Carroll punt. Gilbert outgained Carroll 199-99 in the 1st half with 61-yards coming on a touchdown run by Cameron Cantonwine with 3:07 left in the half. Gilbert led 14-9 at half. All but 16-yards in the 1st half combined where on the ground.
Carroll took the lead back early in the 2nd half with Adam Malik scoring on a 5-yard run with 10:12 left in the 3rd quarter. Carroll held onto the lead at the end of the 3rd, up 15-14. The Tigers defense did a nice job in the 2nd half containing the Gilbert running game, holding them to 92-yards in the 2nd half. It appeared Carroll was going to hold on for a huge road win but a penalty for having 12-players on the field on a missed field goal late, set up Gilbert for a game winning touchdown with 0:52 left. Ethan Rash scored from a 1-yard out to win it for Gilbert. Carroll had a chance on their final possession, returning the kickoff to the Gilbert 38-yard line but they weren’t able to score.
Adam Malik led Carroll with 82-yards and a touchdown on 20 carries. Kieran Polking had 21-yards on 2 carries with a touchdown. Quinten Polking paced the defense with 10.5 tackles with Gavin Holt adding 7 tackles.
