Coon Rapids Bayard 1 (8 Innings)
LoMa rallied past Coon Rapids Bayard in the Class 1A Substate 8 Final after the Crusaders led 1-0 from the 1st inning to the 7th inning. Both teams pitched well with Cal Heydon dominating the Panthers through 6 innings, allowing 2 hits and no runs. Kaleb Kuhl of LoMa struggled in the 1st inning, walking three but battled back, getting the Crusaders in order in the 2nd, 3rd and 4th innings, allowing only 1 baserunner after the 1st through 6 innings of work.
Coon Rapids Bayard had a pair of hits in the 1st inning with Cal Heydon leading off with a single. He was picked off at 2nd base but Ty Heydon walked and Andrew McAlister came in to run for him. Parker Hays singled and Jace Baker walked to load the bases. Tyler Mohr earned their third walk of the inning, scoring McAlister. The Crusaders didn’t have another runner reach base until the 5th inning. Cal Heydon singled in the 5th and stole 2nd but was stranded there. LoMa left Kaleb Kuhl at 2nd base in the 1st inning and stranded a pair of runners in the 3rd, getting their first runner to 2nd base. The Panthers had a runner in the 5th but Coon Rapids Bayard picked him off base to end the inning. Their best chance to score was the 6th getting runners on the corners with 2-outs. Kaleb Kuhl walked and Cale Cunnard singled to move him to 3rd but Cal Heydon picked up his 10th strikeout to end the threat. Macklin Loftus led off the 7th for LoMa with a ground ball that was misplayed and he ended up on 2nd base. Jason Kastner put down a sac bunt and Will Anderson (CR) didn’t stop at 3rd, scoring on the play to tie the game at 1. Coon Rapids Bayard went down in order in the bottom 7th, sending the game to the 8th. Wes Vana doubled down the right field line to start the 8th. Kaleb Kuhl walked and both runners moved a base on passed balls. Cale Cunnard drove in Vana with a sac fly to right field, putting the Panthers up 2-1. Drake Geith singled to score Kaleb Kuhl, stretching the lead to 3-1. Ty Heydon walked with 2-outs in the bottom of the 8th and Parker Hays walked to put the tying run at 1st base. The game ended with Macklin Loftus getting a strikeout to earn the save.
Cal Heydon led the Crusaders with a pair of hits and stole 2 bases. He finished the game pitching 7 innings, allowing 3 hits and 1 earned runs with 10 strikeouts. Parker Hays had a base hit, Tyler Mohr added and RBI and Andrew McAlister scored a run.
The Crusaders end the season 25-4.
