Exira-EHK-Audubon At Van Meter- Class 2A Region 1 Final

Van Meter 9

Exira-EHK-Audubon 4

The Spartans led top ranked Van Meter late before having their seven game winning streak snapped with the Bulldogs using a couple home runs, a few Spartan miscues to score 8-runs over the final three innings to advance to the State Tournament for the 4th straight season. The Spartans weren’t intimated playing at the top ranked Bulldogs and didn’t trail until the bottom of the 4th and were the better team through 3.5 innings. Riley Miller and the defense held the Bulldogs to 2 hits and a run through 3 innings. Their Spartan offense was aggressive at the plate, chasing the Bulldogs starting pitcher in the 3rd inning, then forcing the Bulldogs to go back to their starting pitcher in the 4th inning. They led 3-1 before the Bulldogs bats came alive, helped by a pair of Spartan miscues. Van Meter scored 4-runs in the bottom of the 4th to take their first lead of the game. They added 4-runs in the bottom of the 6th to put the game away.

Jordan Mulford placed a perfect bunt between the pitcher and 3rd baseman with 1-out in the 3rd. Taryn Petersen bunted her to 2nd and Anna Larsen singled to score Mulford from 2nd and Exira-EHK-Audubon led 1-0. Van Meter responded in the bottom of the 1st with Alice Ruggles walking to lead off the inning. She scored on a single by Mady Schnell, tying the game at 1. The Spartans took the lead back in the top of the 4th with Abby Wanser leading off with a single. Zoey Rasmussen walked and Bryli Petersen walked to load the bases. Van Meter changed pitchers and Alissa Testroet singled to score Wanser. Jordan Mulford chopped the ball on the infield and Van Meter made their only error in the game, scoring Liv Inman as the Spartans led 3-1. They left the bases loaded with 1-out and it turned out to be huge. Ava Hohenadel hit a solo home run to leadoff the bottom of the 4th. A pair of singles followed a strikeout, putting two runners on base. Riley Miller got another strikeout for the 2nd out but a ground ball that was misplayed on the infield scored a run, tying the game. Finley Netten singled later in the inning, after a second Spartan error, scoring a pair of runs, giving the Bulldogs their first lead of the game. Abby Wanser singled in the 5th but the Spartans didn’t score and Riley Miller sat the Bulldogs down in order in the bottom of the 5th. The Spartans didn’t get a baserunner in the 6th and the Bulldogs had the momentum coming into the bottom half of the inning. A leadoff walk and a sac bunt fielder’s choice led to a Bulldog run and Finley Netten drilled a 2-run home run to extend the lead to 8-3. The Bulldogs added another run and led 9-3 heading into the top of the 7th. Taryn Petersen led off the 7th for the Spartans and was hit-by-pitch and scored on a single by Lucy Stanerson. The Spartans had two runners on base but the Bulldogs induced a ground ball to 1st base to end the game.

Riley Miller and Abby Wanser both had a pair of hits with Wanser scoring a run. Lucy Stanerson, Alissa Testroet and Jordan Mulford all had a base hit and an RBI with Mulford scoring a run. Anna Larsen added a base hit and an RBI. Riley Miller took the loss, going 6 innings, allowing 7 hits and 5 earned runs with 3 strikeouts.
