Coon Rapids-Bayard hosted Newell-Fonda in the Class 1A Region 3 semifinal. This game had big stipulations as the winner would meet the winner of the LoMa and Woodbine matchup for a chance to go to state. Cal Heydon was on the bump for the Crusaders tonight as he has been their ace throughout the year. The Mustangs batted in the top of each inning. They would struggle against Heydon all night as in the 1st, they would go 3 up and 3 down. CRB would bat in the bottom of each inning. Cal Heydon would reach the bags on an error and would be tagged out at 2nd as his brother Ty would reach on an error as well. Andrew McAlister would score off of an RBI sac bunt from Jace Baker as the Crusaders would go up 1-0 after the 1st. The Mustangs would get their only hit on Cal Heydon in the 2nd before a fly out and strikeout would end the top of the 2nd. The Crusaders had Mason Culbertson and Cal Heydon get on with singles as Ty Heydon would hit a single through the infield to score them both and take a 3-0 lead after 2 innings. Heydon would strikeout all 3 in the 3rd as he had struck out 4 straight. Tyler Mohr would be hit by a pitch in the 3rd but 3 outs surrounded him. Heydon would add 3 K’s in the 4th as he struckout 7 straight to close his 4 innings. Max Shirbroun hit a single and was left stranded as the Crusaders led 3-0 going into the 5th. Mason Culbertson came in relief in the top of the 5th as he would load the bases with an error and 2 walks before Cal came back in to close the final out. Newell would face Ty Heydon in the 6th as he struck out 1 and got two other outs with a runner at 3rd to keep a 3-0 lead after 6. CRB would come back in the 7th and add insurance runs in Shirbroun and Cal Heydon as the Crusaders would lead 5-0. Ty Heydon would walk the first batter than strikeout the next 3 to pick up the 5-0 win and move on to the substate final.
