Earlham At Exira-EHK-Audubon- Class 2A Region 1

Exira-EHK-Audubon 1

Earlham 0

Alissa Testroet was hit-by-pitch and scored on a single by Taryn Petersen in the 3rd inning and that is all it took for Exira-EHK-Audubon to advance on Friday. Riley Miller struck out the final batter of the game on the eleventh pitch of the at-bat, securing the 1-0 win. Neither team had many baserunners as Riley Miller and Eden Forcht both pitched but both defenses came up with huge plays to back them up. The Spartans threatened to extend the lead in the 5th but had a runner thrown out at home. Earlham had chances to tie the game in both the 5th and 6th innings, getting runners on base but stranded four runners on in those two innings combined.

Neither team had a baserunner in the 1st or 2nd inning as the pitching and defenses dominated. Riley Miller struck out four of the first-six batters she faced and Eden Forcht had three strikeouts against six batters to open the game. The Cardinals got the first baserunner in the top of the 3rd with Zoe Nixt walking and stealing 2nd base with 2-outs. Miller induced a ground out to end the threat. Exira-EHK-Audubon took advantage in the bottom of the 3rd. Alissa Testroet was hit-by-pitch and moved to 2nd on a steal attempt that got to the backstop. She scored on a single by Taryn Petersen, putting the Spartans up 1-0. Petersen moved to 2nd on the throw home and stole 3rd but was stranded there. The Cardinals went in order in the 4th with Bryli Petersen making a sharp play on the final out, making a tough catch. The Spartans didn’t get a runner in the 4th with Kenady Ridout making a great catch to end the Spartans inning. A pair of early errors gave the Cardinals a chance in the 5th. They had runners on 2nd and 3rd but Lucy Stanerson made a nice play on a sac bunt and Riley Miller got a big strikeout to end the threat. Zoey Rasmussen led off the bottom of the 5th with a double but Exira-EHK-Audubon didn’t score, attempting a squeeze play and having the runner thrown out at home on a good play by Haley Glade. The inning ended with another strong defensive effort by Earlham on a hard hit ball by Jordan Mulford. Earlham tried to rally with 2-outs in the 6th. Jordan Mulford made a heads up play on right field on a single by Haley Glade. Mulford didn’t dive and took the ball on a hop, forcing Glade to stay at 1st base. Eden Forcht followed with a hard ground ball that looked like it was heading to left field but Taryn Petersen made a great diving stop, holding the runners on 1st and 2nd. A popup on the infield ended the threat and kept the Spartans up 1-0. The Spartans went down in order in the bottom of the 6th, setting up a big 7th inning. Riley Miller got the first-two batters on a pair of ground balls. Keeley Keller singled to right field, where Jordan Mulford again kept the ball in front of  her as it barely landed in fair territory, keeping Keller at 1st base. Zoe Nixt came to bat with 2-outs and her and Riley Miller had a quite a battle. Miller ended the game with the strikeout on the eleventh pitch to end the game.

Taryn Petersen and Zoey Rasmussen had the only hits for Exira-EHK-Audubon with Rasmussen doubling and Petersen driving in Alissa Testroet, who walked and scored. Riley Miller earned the win, going 7 innings, allowing 3 hits with 7 strikeouts.

The Spartans improved to 16-11 and will face either Van Meter or Interstate 35 in the Regional Final on Monday on KIKD 106.7. The Van Meter game was postponed and rescheduled for Saturday at 7:00.
