Kuemper At CYO Tournament

Ryan Sundrup gave Kuemper a strong start on the hill, helping them build a comfortable lead on their way to a nice win in the CYO Tournament opener. The Knights bats heated up in the 2nd inning as the Gaels helped them out with a pair of walks and an error to set up a 3-run inning. Kuemper added runs in the 5th and 6th sprinkling in a bunch of hits with several St Edmond errors and free bases. Charles Mayhall and Nash Leonard teamed up to finish the game on the hill with both looking sharp.

The Knights struck in the 2nd innings with Charles Mayhall and Landon Pottebaum walking before Noah Reiman reached on an error to reach base. Ryan Sundrup drove in their first run and Thomas Pottebaum earned an RBI getting hit-by-pitch and Tristan Janson singled to drive in the third run. The Knights went in order in the 3rd and 4th innings but Tristan Janson singled to start the 5th. Charles Mayhall doubled after Mason Knerl reached on an error and Landon Pottebaum singled to score the second run of the inning. A Noah Reiman single pushed the lead to 6-0. St Edmonds got on the board in the 6th with a double, a walk followed by a single and a sac fly. Kuemper responded, putting the game away with 6-runs in the bottom 6th. The Knights only hit in the 6th came from Ryan Sundrup but they used two errors and five walks to end the game at 12-2.

Ryan Sundrup went 2 2/3 innings, allowing 2 hits with 4 strikeouts while adding a pair of hits, an RBI and scoring a run. Tristan Janson had a pair of hits with 2 RBI and scored twice. Charles Mayhall doubled and drove in a run and Landon Pottebaum had a base hit and scored twice.

Kuemper took an early lead and led most of the game but St Mary’s, Remsen exploded for 11-runs over the final two innings to pick up the win. The Knights struck quick with Tristan Janson reaching on an error and Mason Knerl walking before Aaron McDermott tripled to score both. McDermott scored on a ground out by  Charles Mayhall and Kuemper led 3-0. Kuemper was able to get a runner on base in the 3rd and 4th but didn’t score. They stranded a run at 3rd in the 5th. St Mary’s used that momentum to get things going in the bottom 5th. The Hawks had four straight doubles to start the inning, finishing the inning with six hits and five of them doubles. They scored 6-runs and led 6-3. Kuemper tried to answer with Landon Pottebaum reaching on an error and Ryan Sundrup driving him in with a single. Kuemper was in the game, down 6-4. Things fell apart for Kuemper in the bottom half. They walked four batters and hit two more, filling the basepaths with Hawks. A 2-run double broke open the game and St Mary’s scored 6-runs to lead 11-4. Aaron McDermott drove in Mason Knerl in the 7th but the Knights rally fell short.

Aaron McDemott had a double, triple, 3 RBI and scored a run to lead the Knights. Landon Pottebaum had a base hit and scored a run with Ryan Sundrup getting a base hit with an RBI. Mason Knerl scored twice.

The Knights sit 7-5 heading into a varsity doubleheader at Red Oak on Monday.

The Crusaders won a pitching battle on Saturday morning, squeezing out a run in the 3rd and 6th innings to earn a 2-0 win. The teams combined for six hits while they combined to strikeout eighteen times. Bedford stranded a runners on 2nd and 3rd in the 3rd inning with Cal Heydon getting a big strikeout to end the trouble. Heydon had to fight back in the 4th, walking the leadoff hitter but he struck out the last two guys he faced, stranding the runner at 2nd base. Coon Rapids Bayard cruised through the 5th and 6th innings, then had to hold off a 7th inning rally by Bedford. The Bulldogs had two runners on base with 1-out but Blake Heydon forced an infield fly ball and ended the game with a strikeout.

The Coon Rapids Bayard offense had couple chances but struggled against strong Bedford pitching. Parker Hays singled in the 1st but was stranded at 2nd. They had two runners out at 2nd base in the 2nd inning before breaking through in the 3rd. Cal Heydon tripled with 1-out in the 3rd, then scored on a ground out by Ty Heydon. A double play ended the Crusaders threat in the 4th. Cal Heydon doubled to centerfield to start the 6th, stole 3rd base and scored on a throwing error. The Crusaders had the bases loaded with no outs but couldn’t score another run and took a 2-0 lead into the 7th.

Cal Heydon had a double, triple and scored twice. He earned the win, going 5 innings, allowing 1 hit with 9 strikeouts. Ty Heydon had a base hit and an RBI and Parker Hays added a base hit. Blake Heydon pitched 2 innings, allowing 1 hit with 1 strikeout.

Coon Rapids Bayard struggled at the plate, finishing with one hit. They walked six times but were only able to muster 2-runs in a matchup of undefeated teams. They scored a run in the 1st inning and had the bases loaded but weren’t able to score again. Pleasantville took advantage of the Crusader error in the bottom 1st, scoring 4-runs. They added 2 more runs in the 2nd and led the entire game. The Crusaders struck for a run in the 5th but Pleasantville, which took advantage of four Crusader errors in the game, scored 4-runs in the bottom 5th to end the game 12-2.

Cal Heydon singled for the Crusaders only hit along with scoring one of their runs. Blake Heydon scored their other run.

The Crusaders sit 8-1 going into their home game with Glidden Ralston on Monday.
