Kuemper Vs Union At Knapp Center At Drake- Class 2A Sub-State 6

Union 77

Kuemper 66

Things didn’t bounce Kuemper’s way on Saturday at Union shot the ball well from three, getting good looks off their dribble penetration. Kuemper battled hard, out rebounding Union 15 to 5 on the offensive glass but it wasn’t enough. Kuemper led most of the 1st quarter but Union grabbed the lead for good in the 2nd quarter, holding a Kuemper offense that averaged 84 points per game to 19 points  in the 2nd and 3rd quarters combined. Union led by nine at half but blew the game open in the 3rd, going up by as many as twenty one. Kuemper fought back in the 4th quarter, trapping Union in the full and half court, creating turnovers. They cut the lead to eight with under three minutes remaining but Union hit enough free throws down the stretch and Kuemper couldn’t get any three point shots to fall. Kuemper finished 4-17 from beyond the arc.

Ryan Clair was sharp early as Kuemper did a great job breaking down the Union defense off the dribble and finding him near the basket for easy buckets. Kuemper scored their first-eight points, helping them lead 4-0 and 8-6. Union tied the game at 6 and 8, hitting a pair of early threes. They would finish 8-16 from three. Tregan Beiter put Kuemper up 10-8 and made it 13-10 with a three. Union grabbed a 14-13 lead but Brock Badding nailed a three and Kuemper was up 16-14. Kuemper led 18-14 heading to the 2nd quarter, using a 5-0 run to end the quarter. Ryan Clair made it 20-16 early in the 2nd quarter but Union went on a 9-0 run, grabbing a 25-20 lead. They wouldn’t trail the rest of the game and Kuemper would only get within three once the rest of the game. A Dylan Schon basket in the lane pulled Kuemper within 33-29 late in the 1st half but Union went on a 5-0 to close out the half, leading 38-29.

Kuemper needed to make a run early in the 3rd but the game quickly slipped away. Ryan Clair scored to start the 2nd half but Union pushed their lead to double digits, up 42-31. Dylan Schon scored the next four Kuemper points, keeping them within striking distance, down 45-35. Union used another run, this time 11-0 to lead 56-35 before Jack Badding hit a pair of free throws to pull Kuemper within 56-37 heading to the final stanza. Union combined to outscore Kuemper by 16 points in the final three minutes of the 2nd and 3rd quarters. Griffin Glynn came out aggressive for Kuemper to start the 4th quarter, pulling them within 56-40. Glynn and Ryan Clair scored back-to-back baskets, making it 59-45 as the Kuemper pressure defense was making an impact. Brock Badding hit his second-three and the Knights were down 65-54 but Union was begging to handle the pressure defense better and was making enough free throws to maintain their lead. Griffin Glynn hit a shot in the lane and Kuemper was down 67-56. The deficit hung around ten points until Jack Badding scored to pull Kuemper within eight with around a minute left. Union extended the lead back to thirteen as Kuemper struggled to finish on the offensive end. Quick layups by Griffin Glynn and Jack Badding kept the Knights within eleven but Union knocked down free throws and sealed the win.
