Exira-EHK had a shot hit the backboard and rim as the horn sounded but it bounced away as their rally fell short on Wednesday. The Spartans rallied in the 1st half from down 9 to take a lead at half, then trailed 45-40 with under a minute left. They got a pair of free throws from Taryn Petersen, a steal from Kadence Sporrer who fed Taryn Petersen for a layup with 6.8 seconds left. The Spartans trailed by one when Treynor called timeout with 1.8 seconds remaining. Exira-EHK nearly stole the inbound pass but Treynor had enough of the ball to earn a jump ball. The Cardinals had the possession arrow. After a discussion by the refs, they put 0.7 seconds on the board. Treynor tried to throw the ball deep but Taryn Petersen stole the ball and heaved a shot from behind the halfcourt line. It nearly went in, hitting the backboard and rim before falling away.
The game bounced back and forth early with three lead changes in the first-four baskets. Taryn Petersen put Exira-EHK up 2-0 but Treynor responded with a three, going up 3-2. The Cardinals shot the ball well from deep in the 1st quarter, helping them build a 14-8 lead. Zoey Rasmussen was huge in the 1st half for Exira-EHK and her first-three gave the Spartans a 5-3 lead. Treynor answered with their second-three and led 6-5. Kadence Sporrer had a nifty runner in the lane pulling the Spartans within 9-8 but Treynor closed the quarter on a 5-0 run. The Cardinals lead grew to 16-8 early in the 2nd quarter but Taryn Petersen hit a free throw, making it 16-9. Treynor grabbed their largest lead at 18-9 but Kadence Sporrer scored again followed by back-to-back baskets from Taryn Petersen and Exira-EHK was down 19-15. Treynor extended the lead back to 22-15 but Taryn Petersen answered with a three. The Cardinals pulled back out by seven, 25-18 with a three and had a chance to push the lead to ten but missed an open three from the right wing. Exira-EHK took advantage with Zoey Rasmussen hitting another three and Kadence Sporrer pulling them within 25-23 with a bucket. Zoey Rasmussen gave the Spartans their first lead since 5-3 with her third-three of the half, putting them up 26-25. Treynor answered, going up 27-26 but Kadence Sporrer scored before the end of the half and Exira-EHK was up 28-27 at half.
Neither team could buy a basket in the 3rd quarter. Taryn Petersen had three fouls at half and spent a good portion of the 3rd on the bench. She had to sit again after picking up her 4th foul but the Spartans hung tough with Zoey Rasmussen hitting her fourth-three. That gave the Spartans a 31-27 lead, their largest of the game. Treynor responded with a 6-0 run and led 33-31 heading to the 4th quarter. The two teams combined for nine points in the 3rd. Treynor extended their lead early in the 4th, going up 37-31. Jaelynn Petersen got on the board, hitting a pair of free throws, then answered a Cardinal basket, pulling the Spartans within 39-35. Taryn Petersen cut it to 39-37 but the Spartans were called for a tight block call as Treynor scored. They added the free throw to push their lead to 42-37. Kadence Sporrer came up clutch again with a wing three and the Spartans had hope, down 42-40 with under two minutes to play. Hanna Swanson, hadn’t scored all game for Treynor but made a nice move in the lane, scoring and getting fouled. Her three point play put Treynor up 45-40 with under a minute remaining. That set up the wild finish. Exira-EHK called timeout and were able to get Taryn Petersen the ball up top. She was fouled shooting a three and made two free throws to pull the Spartans within 45-42. Kadence Sporrer stole the inbound and fed Taryn Petersen for a layup, cutting the deficit to 45-44. Treynor needed to inbound with just over six second left and they called a timeout with 1.8 seconds left. The Spartans nearly created a turnover under the basket but the jump ball gave the ball to Treynor with 0.7 left. Taryn Petersen stole the deep pass just beyond halfcourt and heaved the ball towards the rim. The ball nearly went in but Treynor breathed a sigh of relief, holding on for a 45-44 win.
Taryn Petersen led the Spartans with 16 points while Kadence Sporrer was fantastic handling the ball, ending the game with 13 points, 7 rebounds, 4 assists and 3 steals. Harlee Fahn had a great night on the boards, pulling down 12 rebounds. Zoey Rasmussen added 12 points.
The loss ends a tremendous season for the Spartans at 18-6.

Coon Rapids-Bayard vs Newell-Fonda – 1A Region 3 Final

The Coon Rapids-Bayard Crusaders played well through the first three quarters but came up short against Newell-Fonda. The Crusaders ended their season for the second straight year in a regional final. CRB only led once in the ball game and trailed most of it by double digits. CRB jumped out to a 4-2 lead in the first quarter. Newell-Fonda would end the quarter on an 18-2 run, taking a 20-6 lead going to the second quarter. The Crusaders were better offensively in the second quarter, and they came away with some big steals as they would cut into the Mustang lead. CRB would still trail at the half 30-19 to Newell-Fonda.
Coming out of the locker room, Newell-Fonda would grow their lead to 18 points, but CRB would go on a run to cut back into the lead. The third quarter was the best offensive quarter for CRB, as they added 15 points. The Crusaders would trail 48-34 going to the fourth quarter. In the fourth quarter, Newell-Fonda would open the game up, scoring 23 points. CRB would go on to lose 71-40.
Malia Clayburg had a great all around game for CRB as she finished with a team-high 16 points. Clayburg also pulled down five rebounds. Anna Hart added nine points and five steals. Ashtyn Klocke had a team-high six rebounds in the loss. With the loss, CRB’s season comes to an end at 18-5.
