Kuemper made a couple critical stops in the 4th quarter, stretching a one point lead to five, then held on to win a matchup of top five ranked teams. The Knights had to battle back a couple times in the 1st half as West Lyon jumped out 5-0 and 13-5 in the 1st quarter and were up 32-22 in the 2nd quarter. Each time the Knights answered tying the game at 18 and having a chance to take the lead going into half. They grabbed their first lead starting the 3rd quarter as the lead changed hands several times in the 3rd. Brock Badding caught fire early in the 3rd with a pair of threes and a blocked shot at the Knights took the lead for good. West Lyon pulled within 66-65 but Tregan Beiter had back-to-back baskets that kept the Knights in the lead. Beiter came up with another clutch bucket late after West Lyon pulled within 74-73, stretching it to 77-73. Kuemper shot 52.4% from the field on Saturday, hitting 6-16 from three. They only turned the ball over three times while forcing the Wildcats into 15 turnovers.
West Lyon was sharp early, going up 5-0, using cuts to the basket and good interior passing. The Knights were able to get to the rim early but weren’t able to finish until Ryan Clair scored, pulling them within 5-2. The Wildcats were doing a nice job contending shots in the lane early and were very sharp against the Knights interior passing game. Tregan Beiter cut the deficit to 8-5 but West Lyon scored the next five points. Beiter and Dylan Schon helped the Knights get on a run, combining for five points as the Knights squeezed to within 13-10. Carson Hoogeveen was outstanding all game for West Lyon and kept the Wildcats in the lead hitting one of his seven-threes in the game. Tregan Beiter pulled Kuemper within 18-16 and Carson Kanne tied the game for the first time at 18. Hoogeveen hit another three for the Wildcats and they held a 23-20 lead after the 1st quarter. West Lyon started the 2nd quarter similar to the 1st quarter, getting the ball inside, but this time they kicked to the perimeter, hitting six-threes in the 1st half. A 9-2 run for West Lyon pushed their lead to 32-22 but Kuemper answered quickly. Ryan Clair had back-to-back baskets, followed by buckets from Dylan Schon and Jack Badding. Kuemper cut the deficit to 32-30 but West Lyon went up 35-30. Jack Badding hit Kuemper’s first-three of the half, pulling the Knights within 35-33 but West Lyon answered with a three. Tregan Beiter scored inside for Kuemper and Jack Badding sank his second-three, tying the game at 38. The Knights made a stop but weren’t able to get a shot off before the shot clock expired and the game was tied at 38 at half.
Tregan Beiter hit a three to open the 2nd half and Kuemper had their first lead. Dylan Schon pushed it to 43-38 and 45-40. West Lyon went on a 8-2 run and lead 48-47. Ryan Clair put Kuemper up 49-48 as the game seesawed back and forth. West Lyon went up 50-49, extending it to 52-49, then 55-51. Griffin Glynn cut it to 55-53 and Ryan Clair tied the game at 55. West Lyon took a 60-59 lead into the 4th quarter. Brock Badding hit a three to start the 4th quarter and Kuemper never trailed again. His second-three pushed their lead to 65- 60. West Lyon chipped away, pulling within 66-65 but Tregan Beiter hit a bucket making it 68-65, then answered a basket from West Lyon with a bucket to keep Kuemper up 70-67. Dylan Schon pushed the lead to 72-67 but West Lyon rallied again with Jorden Meyer able to get to the rim. The Knights held a 74-73 lead when Tregan Beiter hit a clutch three, putting Kuemper up four. West Lyon cut it to two but Dylan Schon scored inside for a 79-75 lead. Jack Badding salted it away with a pair of free throws before Carson Hoogeveen hit a long three at the buzzer.
Tregan Beiter paced Kuemper with 23 points to go with 3 steals, hitting several clutch shots in the 2nd half. Dylan Schon was terrific, finishing with 19 points, 7 rebounds and 4 steals. Ryan Clair and Jack Badding both had 12 points with Clair adding 5 rebounds and Badding 4 assists. Carson Kanne led the Knights with 8 assists.
The win improves Kuemper to 13-1. They host Harlan on Monday.

Audubon earned a needed win on Saturday, going on the road and taking control in the 2nd half. The Wheelers had ten players score with three in double figures. They led throughout, going up 14-8 at the end of the 1st quarter, before extending it to 29-19 at half. The blew the game open with an outstanding defense effort in the 3rd quarter and 2nd half. The Wheelers held Exira-EHK to 12 points in the 3rd and 22 for the 2nd half while scoring 22 points in the 3rd quarter.
Carson Wessel led the Wheelers with 15 points, Jorgen Nowatzke added 12 points and Oliver Deist had 11 points. The Wheelers had six players between 5 and 15 points.
The win improves the Wheelers to 5-7 overall. They host Missouri Valley on Tuesday.
