Kuemper Vs Dowling At Catholic Classic At Dowling

Dowling 62

Kuemper 54

Kuemper started quickly on Saturday, building a 6-2 lead with a few nifty backdoor cuts and passes with Ryan Clair, Jack Badding and Brock Badding scoring. The Knights offense went quiet the rest of the 1st quarter and Dowling Catholic took the lead and didn’t relinquish it as Kuemper suffered their first loss of the season. The Knights played well, especially on the defensive end but struggled to knock down looks from the outside, going 2-12 from three and struggled to finish inside at times against a taller, athletic Maroons defense. Kuemper trailed 14-8 at the end of the 1st quarter and were down by as many as 9 in the 1st half, trailing 32-23 at half. They kept battling back, having opportunities to tie or make it a one possession game but weren’t able to get over the hump. The Knights shot 40.8% from the field and both teams shot well from the free throw line. The Knights hit 12-15 while Dowling was 15-20.

Dylan Schon battled hard, getting to the rim and keeping the Knights close. Schon pulled Kuemper within 13-8 and 16-10. He added three free throws to pull them within 19-13 as the Maroons had built a 19-10 lead. Dowling went back up 22-13 before Jack Badding scored and Ryan Clair had back-to-back baskets, pulling Kuemper within 22-19. Tregan Beiter pulled Kuemper within 25-21 and Schon scored again to make it 29-23 Dowling. The Marrons closed the half up 32-23.

A free throw from Ryan Clair and a pair of free throws from Carson Kanne opened the 2nd half as Kuemper pulled within 32-26 but neither offense could muster much until late in the quarter. Dowling grabbed their largest lead at 40-28 but Tregan Beiter scored and Griffin Glynn hit a pair of free throws, pulling the Knights within 40-32. A Brock Badding three, their first of the game, cut the Knights deficit to 43-35 but they trailed 45-35 entering the final stanza. Ryan Clair got going in the 4th quarter, able to score at the rim but Dowling kept answering. Kuemper pulled within 58-52 in the closing minutes but never got the lead under six as Dowling earned the tough win.
