The Coon Rapids-Bayard Crusaders open up the season with a win over Audubon on Monday. Most of the game was back and forth as it stayed close throughout. Neither team held a double-digit lead in the match-up. The Wheelers started off shooting it well from behind the arc as they knocked down five three-pointers in the first quarter. Audubon grew their lead to 17-8 and would lead 17-10 going to the second quarter. Going to the second quarter, Coon Rapids-Bayard made adjustments defensively as they would crawl back into the game. CRB scored 20 points in the quarter as the game would be tied 30-30 going at the half.
At the start of the third quarter, both teams struggled offensively with turnovers and missed shots. The Wheelers would take control of the quarter late, holding on to a 42-40 lead going to the fourth quarter. The Crusaders struggled shooting from the three-point line, going 0-11. CRB’s defense picked up in the fourth quarter, holding the Wheelers to only six points. The Crusaders would go on to win 56-47 over Audubon.
Cal Heydon had a big game for CRB, scoring a game-high 29 points. The Crusaders were 18-23 from the free-throw line as a team. Ty Heydon chipped in 11 points in the win for CRB. Cal Heydon was the leading rebounder for CRB with nine. Audubon was really balanced in scoring, as Mason Steckler had a team-high 12 points. Brody Weber and Brody Schultes each added nine points off the bench. As a team, Audubon knocked down eight three-pointers.
With the win, CRB improves to 1-0 on the season, and the loss drops Audubon to 0-1. The Crusaders are back in action on Tuesday against Ar-We-Va, and the Wheelers return to the court on Tuesday against Underwood.
