Kuemper improved to 1-1 on the season with a hard fought win at Coon Rapids Bayard on Tuesday in the season opener for the Crusaders. Kuemper hit eight three point shots in the 1st half, countering the Coon Rapids Bayard going 12-15 from the free throw line while the Knights didn’t shoot a free throw in the 1st half. The Knights got hot from deep in the 2nd quarter with Elsa Tiefenthaler leading the way, knocking in several from 25 feet or deeper. She received help from Charlotte Hackfort and Karsyn Overmohle, helping the Knights build a 12-point lead in the 2nd quarter. Coon Rapids Bayard kept chipping away, using a 10-point 1st half by Malia Clayburg, a pair of three’s from Aubrey Hofbauer and a late one from Anna Hart to pull within 36-29 at half.
Kuemper jumped out 6-0 with three point shots from Kaylie Simons and Elsa Tiefenthaler. A 7-0 run by Malia Clayburg put Coon Rapids Bayard up 9-8 but Karsyn Overmohle hit a bucket, putting Kuemper up 10-9. Clayburg scored again for Coon Rapids Bayard and the Crusaders led 11-10. The game was tied at 12 and 14 on a bucket by Addy Anthofer. An Elsa Tiefenthaler three put Kuemper up for good. Her three made it 17-14 at the end of the 1st quarter. Charlotte Hackfort opened the 2nd quarter with a three with Elsa Tiefenthaler adding another three but Aubrey Hofbauer drained her own three for Coon Rapids Bayard keeping them in striking distance. Karsyn Overmohle extended the Knights lead to 26-17 but Aubrey Hofbauer pulled the Crusaders within 26-20. Baskets by Alivia Schenkelberg and Elsa Tiefenthaler pushed the Kuemper lead to 30-20 and they stretched it to 36-24 on a bucket from Karsyn Overmohle. Ella Heithoff hit a pull up shot on the baseline and Anna Hart hit a three to pull Coon Rapids Bayard within 36-29 at half.
Malia Clayburg scored for Coon Rapids Bayard to start the 2nd half and CRB trailed 36-31 but Kuemper responded with buckets from Alivia Schenkelberg, a free throw from Charlotte Hackfort and a bucket from Elsa Tiefenthaler and Kuemper led 41-31. The Crusaders responded with Aubrey Hofbauer and Anna Hart hitting back-to-back three pointers, pulling them within 41-39. After a Kuemper timeout Elsa Tiefenthaler hit a deep three and Kuemper added a pair of free throws to lead 46-40. Anna Hart made a pair of free throws and Ashtyn Klocke hit a free throw, pulling Coon Rapids Bayard within 46-43. The Knights led 48-45 going into the 4th quarter. Elsa Tiefenthaler hit back-to-back three pointers and Kuemper was up nine early in the 4th quarter. Malia Clayburg responded with a three but Kuemper never allowed the lead to get under six, leading by as many as ten down the stretch.
Elsa Tiefenthaler had a huge game with six-three pointers, finishing with 27-points to go with 5 assists. Karsyn Overmohle had 10-points, 6 rebounds and 4 assists. Charlotte Hackfort added 9-points, Kaylie Simons had 7-points, Cierra Pudenz 5 rebounds and 3 steals while Addy Anthofer had a big game inside on defense.
Malia Clayburg finished with 18-points for Coon Rapids Bayard. Anna Hart had 16-points and Aubrey Hofbauer added 14-points, 5 rebounds and 4 assists. Ella Heithoff had a nice floor game with 5 rebounds and 4 assists.
The Knights improved to 1-1 overall and will host Carroll on 93.7 KKRL on Tuesday. Coon Rapids Bayard opens 0-1 and heads to Ar-We-Va on Tuesday.

The Carroll Tigers opened the season with a win on the road at Webster City as they dominated on the glass. Carroll scored in double digits in each quarter as they led early in the ball game. The Tigers defense also shined as they recorded 17 steals in the win. Carroll used their pressure defense in the first half as they jumped out to an early lead 17-5 going to the second quarter. Carroll held Webster City to only 11 points in the first half, as they would lead 34-11 at the half. Coming out of the locker room, the Tigers changed up their defense, which gave Webster City a different look. The Tigers would add 14 points in the third quarter as their lead continued to grow. Carroll would lead 48-20 going to the fourth quarter. The Tigers were outscored by three in the final quarter but would go on to win 58-33.
Carroll had three different players score in double figures. Carly Menken led the Tigers in scoring with 18 points. Chloe Kock chipped in 11 for Carroll in the win. Ali Kock was the last Carroll player in double figures with ten. Olivia Rowedder led the Tigers in rebounds with seven. As a team, Carroll had 17 steals. Senior Katelyn Aden had a team-high six steals in the win. With the win Carroll starts the season 1-0. The Tigers are back in action on Tuesday against Kuemper.

The South Central Calhoun Titans fall in their season opener to a good Storm Lake team at home. The Titans struggled to hit open shots but knocked down seven threes in the loss. Storm Lake scored 21 points in the first quarter and SCC fell down early. The Titans would trail 21-12 going to the second quarter. The Titans would trail 37-22 at the half. In the second half, SCC struggled offensively as they were unable to score double figures in the third and fourth quarters. Storm Lake continued to roll offensively as they would go on to win 70-36.
All six girls who played for SCC scored in the game. Blair Schleisman and Macie Dorman each chipped in eight points for the Titans. Bre Patterson added six points in the loss. Sadie Wheelock pulled down a team-high 11 rebounds. With the loss, SCC falls to 0-1. The Titans are back in action on Tuesday against South Hamilton.
