The Kuemper Knights advance to a regional final next week with a big five-set win over Des Moines Christian. The Knights led the majority of the first set. The set was only tied twice, and that was early on. Kuemper took a 3-2 lead and never looked back. The Knights would go on to win the set 25-21 over DMC. Kuemper struggled with the height of DMC at the net, with most of their balls being tipped or blocked. Kuemper would hold a lead late in the second set but saw it slip away. The Knights held a 16-15 lead late, but DMC would end the set on a 10-4 run to come back and win 25-20. 

The match would be tied 1-1, going to the third set. DMC controlled the third set, as Kuemper never had a lead. The set was tied four different times. The Lions would win the third set 25-20, taking a 2-1 lead over Kuemper. Needing a win in the fourth set, the Knights would play with more confidence and become aggressive. The Knights led most of the set as they took a 13-12 lead. Kuemper would go on to win the set 25-18, sending it to a fifth set. The fifth set was only tied once and that was at 1-1. Kuemper led the whole set and played outstandingly as they went on to win 15-10. With the win in the fifth set, Kuemper would beat DMC 3-2.

Mariah Heuton had a team-high 13 kills as she started to swing really well in the last two sets. Kolbi Peter and Brianna Wittrock also had double-digit kills. Peter recorded 12 kills for Kuemper, while Wittrock had ten. As a team, Kuemper had 18 blocks at the net. Wittrock had a team-high seven in the win. Elsa Tiefenthaler and Karsyn Overmohle did a great job of moving the ball around to different hitters. Tiefenthaler had 22 assists for Kuemper. Overmohle had 21 assists. With the win, Kuemper improved to 36-3. The Knights are back in action on Tuesday in the regional final against Clarinda.

Carroll At Lewis Central- Class 4A Region 5

Carroll played one of their best matches of the year, pushing Lewis Central to the limit in the opening set and competing well in the final two sets. Carroll held a lead in two of the three sets and continually made runs at the Titans.

Carroll took the first of many leads in set one on an ace from Olivia Rowedder, going up 5-4. The set was tied at 1 but Lewis Central went on a 3-0 run. Carroll responded with a 5-0 run, taking a 6-4 lead. The set was tied at 6 and 7, with Katelyn Aden earning a kill to tie it at 7. The Tigers went 8-7 but the Titans grabbed a 9-8 lead. Carroll went back up 10-9 on a kill from Chloe Kock. The set was tied at 10 and 11 before the Titans grabbed the lead for good at 12-11. The Titans grabbed their largest lead of the set at 18-14 but Carroll battled back and Analia Ayala had a kill, tying it at 19, finishing a 3-0 Carroll run. Lewis Central answered with a 3-0 run, leading 22-19. Analia Ayala pulled the Tigers within 23-21 and another to make it 24-23. The Titans earned a hard fought 25-23 win.

The Titans used the momentum of winning the opening set, building a 5-1 lead in set two. Katelyn Aden had a kill, pulling Carroll within 5-2. Lewis Central increased their aggressiveness at the net, extending their lead to 10-4 but Carroll fought back. Ella Pick had a nice kill and Carroll was within 11-7. Lewis Central stretched the lead back to 15-8. Amanda Wardell and Katelyn Aden had back-to-back kills, pulling Carroll within 16-11. A Wardell kill moments later cut the Titans lead to 18-13 but they went on a 4-0 run to lead 22-13. Katelyn Aden stopped the run with a kill and Carroll scored three in a row, pulling within 22-17. Lewis Central finished out the set, winning 25-18.

Olivia Rowedder put Carroll up 1-0 to start set three. Lewis Central scored four in a row before Rowedder had another kill. A Katelyn Aden pulled Carroll within 6-3 but Lewis Central slowly stretched the lead to 15-6. Carroll went on a 4-0 run, getting within 15-10. Lewis Central edged away again, going up 21-13 and went on to win 25-17.

Emily Puck had 15 assists for Carroll along with 8 digs. Katelyn Aden led the Tigers with 8 kills with Analia Ayala adding 4 kills and Amanda Wardell finishing with 5 kills. Marasyn Wittrock paced the back row with 13 digs with Katelyn Aden having 11 digs and Aubrie Drake finishing with 9 digs.

The loss ends the Tigers season at 18-18.
