The Carroll Tigers pick up their second conference win of the season as they sweep Boone on the road on Thursday in RRC volleyball action. The Tigers did a nice job of bouncing back from a loss on Tuesday to a good Carlisle team. Emily Puck had a great game setting the ball for the Tigers as she had double-digit assists. The first two sets were close, and Carroll was able to pull away in the third. In the first set, the Tigers won by five, 25-20, as they were able to pull away late in the set to pick up the win. The second set would need extra time as Carroll would win by two points at 27-25 to take a 2-0 advantage over Boone. Carroll was able to build a lead in the third set that helped them pull away and win by double digits at 25-15. The Tigers would go on to beat Boone 3-0, winning three straight sets in the match.

Emily Puck recorded 28 assists in the win for Carroll, spreading the volleyball out to different hitters. The Tigers were led by Olivia Rowedder at the net with 11 kills. Off the bench, Analia Ayala finished with nine kills. As a team, Carroll recorded 35 kills. Carroll did a great job at the net blocking as they picked up 14 blocks. Chloe Kock had a team-high six blocks for Carroll. As a team, Carroll also recorded eight aces. With the win, the Tigers improved to 17-17. Carroll is back in action on Tuesday against Denison-Schleswig in the Class 4A Region 5 playoffs.

Kuemper vs Sergeant Bluff Luton

The Kuemper Knight fought hard as they closed out the regular season with a loss to Sergaent Bluff Luton at home. The match was back and forth, and it took till the fifth set to find a winner. The first set was close, but SBL pulled away at the end and won 25-20, taking a 1-0 lead over Kuemper. The Knights bounced back in the second set as they won 25-20, tying the match at 1-1. Kuemper and SBL traded sets on Thursday. Sergeant Bluff Luton would win the third set as it was back and forth. SBL won 25-22, taking a 2-1 lead over the Knights. Needing a win in the fourth set, Kuemper dominated as they won 25-16, sending it to a winner-take-all fifth set. The fifth set was exciting as it was back and forth. SBL would come away with a 15-13 win in the fifth set and beat Kuemper 3-2.

Brianna Wittrock and Mariah Heuton each had double-digit kills for the Knights. Wittrock had a team-high 14 kills in the loss. Heuton recorded ten kills. As a team, Kuemper had 16 blocks in the loss. Wittrock picked up a team-high 8 blocks. Elsa Tiefenthaler and Karsyn Overmohle were outstanding in setting the ball to the Kumper hitters. Overmohle recorded 22 assists, while Tiefenthaler had 21 for the Knights. With the loss, Kuemper falls to 34-3. The Knights are back in action on Tuesday against Harlan in the Class 3A Region 7 quarterfinals.

Paton Churdan at Ogden

The Paton Churdan Rockets started slow but were able to adjust as they took one set for Ogden on Thursday in a 3-1 loss. The Rockets fell down early in set one and dug themselves into a hole. Odgen went on to win the first set 25-6. Paton Churdan made adjustments in the second set but fell down 2-0 to Ogden with a 25-17 loss in the second set. In a must-win and important third set, Paton Churdan was able to sneak out a win. The third set needed extra time, but PC would come away with a 26-24 win to cut into the Ogden advantage 2-1. In the fourth set, Ogden would come out aggressive as they would build a lead and come away with a 25-13 win and 3-1 victory over Paton Churdan. Alivya Smith had a good match for PC, picking up five kills and three aces. Mia Russell also had five kills in the loss for Paton Churdan. With the loss, PC falls to 3-10. The Rockets are back in action on Saturday at the Rolling Valley Conference Tournament.

East Sac County at Alta-Aurelia

East Sac County got off to a slow start, dropping the first set, but then won three straight to pick up a win on the road at Alta-Aurelia. ESC trailed 16-10 halfway through the first set and couldn’t recover as they would drop set one 25-23. The Raiders made adjustments in the second set as they jumped out to a 6-0 lead. Alta-Aurelia would tie it at 8-8. ESC took the lead at 9-8 and never looked back as they won set two 25-19. With the win in the second set, the Raiders tie the match up at 1-1. ESC built an early lead in the third set and continued their momentum as they went on to win 25-15. In an important fourth set, it would be back and forth, and East Sac would trail early multiple times. Alta-Aurelia led 18-17 late in the set. The Raiders were able to go up 20-18 and went on to win the set 25-19. With the win in the fourth set, the Raiders would beat Alta-Aurelia 3-1.

Addisen Ehler was outstanding at the net, as she had a team-high 20 kills in the win. Jordin Carroll worked the ball to her hitters all match as she picked up 33 assists for the Raiders. Kendall Quirk picked up nine kills for ESC. As a team, East Sac County had 41 kills. The Raiders also recorded 88 digs in the win. With the win, East Sac County improved to 19-8. The win also clinched the Raiders a share of the Twin Lakes Conference Volleyball Championship. East Sac County is back in action on Wednesday at Ridge View.

South Central Calhoun took care of business in the opener of their triangular on Thursday, earning a hard fought win over Sioux Central. The first-two sets were tight but the Titans got strong nights at the net with Jayci Graeve leading them with 13 kills and Brenna McAlister finishing with 12 kills. McAlister went over 1,000 kills in her career in the match. Norah Riedesel added another career mark for the Titans, finishing with 28 assists, going over 1,500 in her career. Sadie Wheelock helped the Titans with a strong game in the middle, adding 6 kills. Alexa Holm and Brenna McAlister both played well in the back row with Holm ending with 14 digs and McAlister with 11 digs. McAlister finished with a team high 5 aces. Macie Dorman pitched in with 9 digs. 

The win set up a meeting with Newell Fonda for the Twin Lakes Conference title. That story is below.

South Central Calhoun earned a share of the Twin Lakes Conference title with an impressive 3-1 win over conference leader Newell Fonda. TheTitans led most of set one, getting up by 7 before falling late. They switched the outcome on Newell Fonda in set two. The Mustangs took an early lead and went up by 7 only to have the Titans rally, take a late lead and tie the match at a set apiece. Set three belong to South Central Calhoun, jumping out 17-5 and winning with four straight aces from Brooklyn Pruitt. The Titans were up 2-1, heading into set four. The final set featured four lead changes and seven ties with the Titans getting clutch plays from Norah Riedesel late and a pair of huge serves by Alexa Holm to win the match. 

Jayci Graeve put the Titans up 3-2 in set one as they built a 13-6 lead with another kill from Graeve and Norah Riedesel adding a kill. Brooklyn Pruitt, Macie Dorman and Alexa Holm all had ace serves during that stretch. A third Jayci Graeve kill put the Titans up 15-8 but Newell Fonda began to chip away, using a 9-2 run to tie the set 17 before taking a 19-18 lead. The Titans fought hard with Kaitlyn O’Neill kill tying it at 20 and the Titans tying it at 21. Newell Fonda closed out the set with a 4-0 run to win 25-21. 

Brenna McAlister gave the Titans early momentum with a pair of aces to start set two. The Titans went up 3-0 but Newell Fonda answered with a 5-0 run. Brenna McAlister and Sadie Wheelock kept it close with a kill each. The Titans were down 7-5 but the Mustangs went on a 5-0 run. Jayci Graeve stopped the run with a kill and Blair Schleisman and Nicole Meyer followed with a Schleisman kill and an ace from Meyer. Macie Dorman had an ace, pulling South Central Calhoun within 13-10, helping spark a run, tying it at 13. Newell Fonda went up by two but South Central Calhoun tied it at 16, 17 and 18. A Mustang error gave the Titans their first lead since 3-2 at 21-20. Brenna McAlister finished the set with 3 kills and the Titans won 25-22, tying the match at a set apiece. 

South Central Calhoun used that momentum to roll in set three. Jayci Graeve had four kills, Blair Schleisman had a kill, Norah Riedesel added a kll and Brooklyn Pruitt had an ace as the Titans went up 10-4. The Titans went up 17-5 before Newell Fonda cut into the deficit, pulling within 20-12. South Central Calhoun regained the momentum and Brooklyn Pruitt closed out the set with four straight aces. 

Jaycie Graeve struck early for the Titans in set four, giving them a 1-0 lead with a kill. Newell Fonda tied the set at 1 and 3 but Norah Riedesel had a kill, followed by a kill from Kaitlyn O’Neill and an ace from Olivia Wiese. putting them up 7-4. The Mustangs rallied again, tying the set at 9 before going up 10-9. The set was tied at 10 and Alexa Holm had an ace to give the Titans a 11-10 lead. Norah Riedesel had a kill and Holm added another ace, pushing the lead to 13-10. The Titans got up by as much as four but Newell Fonda rallied, tying it at 21 and taking a 22-21 lead. Brenna McAlister tied the set at 22 but Newell Fonda went up 23-22. Norah Riedesel had a perfect dump kill to tie the set and put Alexa Holm to the service line. Holm served an ace and Newell Fonda called timeout. Holm ended the match on her next serve with another ace and the Titans earned a 3-1 win. 

Jayci Graeve had a team high 15 kills with 9 digs with Brenna McAlister adding 10 kills with 8 digs and a pair of aces. Norah Riedesel had 26 assists and 4 huge kills. Brooklyn Pruitt and Alexa Holm were huge serving with Pruitt having 7 aces and Holm adding 5 aces with 12 digs. Sadie Wheelock had 4 kills and Kaitlyn O’Neill had 5 kills and 2 big blocks. Macie Dorman added 2 aces. 

The win improved South Central Calhoun to 25-9 overall and 9-2 in the Twin Lakes Conference, sharing the title with Newell Fonda, East Sac and Emmetsburg. They head to Winterset for a tournament on Saturday.
