Kuemper vs Lewis Central

The Kuemper Knights pick up a big conference win at home as they knock off one of the top teams in Class 4A. With the win over Lewis Central, Kuemper now pulls within a three-way tie for first place in the Hawkeye Ten Conference. The first set was back and forth, and the largest lead for either team was three points. The first set was tied 14 different times. Kuemper was able to pick up a 29-27 win in the first set to take an early 1-0 lead over Lewis Central. In the second set, Kuemper builds a lead as they threaten to pull away. Kuemper would lead 16-10 late in the set, but Lewis Central responded as they would have set point at 24-21. The Knights ended the second set on a 5-0 run to win 26-24. With the set two win, Kuemper would take a 2-0 lead going to an important third set. Lewis Central controlled most of the third set. It started back and forth as it was tied 9-9 early. Lewis Central would go on a 9-0 run to lead 18-9. The Titans would go on to win the third set 25-21, sending it to a fourth.  The fourth set was the only set that did not have a tie, as Kuemper led the whole way. The Knight would have to hold off a late Lewis Central run but would go on to win 25-22, beating the Titans 3-1.

Brianna Wittrock picked up a team-high 17 kills for Kuemper in the win. Mariah Heuton chipped in ten kills. Kuemper was outstanding on the offensive end at the net, as they recorded 31 kills. Wittrock and Kaylie Simons had a team-high four aces for the Knights. As a team, Kuemper had 12 aces. The Knights also did a great job blocking at the net, as they picked up 16 blocks as a team. Kuemper improved their record with the win to 28-2 and 8-1 in the Hawkey Ten. The Knights are back in action on Saturday at the Hampton Dumont tournament.

The Carroll Tigers struggled on the road on Thursday as they fell to Bondurat-Farrar. Carroll struggled at the net, as they had more attack errors than kills. Bondurant-Farrar would win the first set 25-13, taking a 1-0 lead over Carroll. The Bluejays responded with another 25-13 win in set two. The third set was the best match, but Bondurat-Farrar would come out on top, winning 25-18 and 3-0 over Carroll. Katelyn Aden and Amanda Wardell led the Tigers in kills with seven. Emily Puck picked up a team-high 16 assists in the loss. As a team, Carroll recorded four blocks. With the loss, the Tigers fell to 16-16. Carroll is back in action on Tuesday against Carlisle.

Paton Churdan at Ar-We-Va

The Ar-We-Va Rockets picked up their first win of the season as they beat Paton Churdan on Thursday. With the win, the Rockets also moved out of last place in the conference standings. Only one of the sets was close. Ar-We-Va was able to build a lead in the first set as they would win by double-digit points at 25-14. Paton Churdan made adjustments in the second set, but Ar-We-Va would come out with a close win, 25-21. The Rockets locked up a conference win with another double-digit win in set three as they beat Paton Churdan 25-13 and 3-0.

For Ar-We-Va, Annalee Wittrock recorded a team-high nine kills in the win. Amber Ragalle worked the volleyball around to different hitters as she picked up 23 assists for Ar-We-Va. Gabbie Hundling chipped in seven kills at the net. As a team, Ar-We-Va recorded 24 kills. Emma Leiting recorded a team-high 16 digs. Ar-We-Va, as a team, recorded 54 digs. Paton Churdan was Mia Russell, who had four kills. Grace Cullum added two aces. Alivya Smith was great in the back row as she picked up 14 digs.

With the win, Ar-We-Va improves to 1-19. The Rockets are back in action on Saturday at the CAM tournament. With the loss, Paton Churdan falls to 2-9. The Rockets return to the court on Tuesday against Colo-Nesco.

The Coon Rapids-Bayard Crusaders fell down early and won three straight sets to pick up a win over CAM on Thursday. The first two sets were the closest as CAM was able to sneak out a win in set one 25-22 and a win in set two 25-21 taking a 2-0 lead. Needing a win in the third set, CRB would dominate as they picked up a double-digit win at 25-11 to send the match to an important fourth set. In the fourth set, the Crusades were able to build a lead and capitalize on some CAM mistakes to come out with a 25-17 win, evening the match up a 2-2. In the fifth set, CRB would come out as dominant as they won easily 15-2. With the win in set five, CRB would beat CAM 3-2.

The Crusades were aggressive at the nets in the win as they totaled 42 kills as a team in the win. Malia Clayburg picked up a team-high 17 kills for the Crusaders. Amelia Cook continued her great season as she had a team-high 34 assists. In the five-set win, CRB recorded over 100 digs. Anna Hart had a team-high 30 digs in the win. With the win, CRB improved to 19-5. The Crusaders are back in action on Saturday, October 19th, at the Rolling Valley Conference Tournament at West Harrison.

IKM-Manning at Audubon

The IKM-Manning Wolves picked up a conference win over Audubon on Thursday in a match that went four sets. The third set was the closest of the match. IKM-Manning controlled the first set as they were able to pull away, picking up a 25-19 win, taking a 1-0 lead. The Wolves were dominant in the second set, picking up a big win 25-11, taking a 2-0 lead over Audubon. The third set was exciting and back and forth, and extra time was needed to find a winner. Audubon would pick up a win in the third set, beating IKM-Manning 33-31. In a critical fourth set, IKM-Manning picked up a close win 25-21 as they went on to beat Audubon 3-1.

Addisyn Bandow led the Wolves in kills with 17. Keagan Eischeid also recorded double-digit kills with ten in the win. Karlee Arp led the Wolves in assists with 37. As a team, IKM-Manning recorded 11 blocks. They were led by Katelyn and Addisyn Bandow with three blocks each. For Audubon, Harlow Miller had 23 kills in the loss. Anna Larsen chipped in 32 assists for the Wheelers. As a team, Audubon recorded 64 digs.

With the win, IKM-Manning improved to 10-14. The Wolves are back in action on Monday in the Western Iowa Conference Tournament. The loss drops Audubon to 7-18. The Wheelers return to the court on Monday in the Western Iowa Conference Tournament.

The Spartans won their 7th straight, earning a Rolling Valley Conference Championship with a 7-1 record and the tie-breaker over Boyer Valley, which also ended the conference season at 7-1. Exira-EHK picked up a sweep on Thursday against West Harrison, winning in impressive fashion. They won 25-13 in the opening set, then picked up a 25-17 and 25-18 wins to close out the match. Jaelynn Petersen was outstanding at the net again, having a team high 15 kills to go with 3 blocks. She added 3 aces and 6 digs. Mayne Jorgensen and Taryn Petersen both had 6 kills with Petersen adding 7 aces and 4 blocks, both team highs. Brooklyn Flathers led them in assists with 15 with Riley Miller having 13 assists to go with 4 kills and 4 aces. Zoey Rasmussen had 7 digs and a pair of aces. The Spartans are 12-3 overall and will head to Exira-EHK on Monday.

East Sac controlled sets one and two, taking early leads, then bounced back and took set four after the Titans played their best set of the match in set three. South Central Calhoun led 1-0 in the first-three sets, going up 2-0 in set three. The Raiders went up 2-1 in set one and led most of the set with three ties, the last coming at 4-4. The Raiders took the lead for good in set two at 3-2 and never relinquished it. South Central Calhoun responded in set three after the Raiders took their only lead at 17-16, going back on top 18-17 and holding on to win. The Raiders took the lead first in set four and never trailed. The Titans tied it at 1 and 7 but never took the lead and the Raiders stretched the lead to 16-10. 

Katelyn Schmitt tied the opening set at 1 and the Raiders went up 2-1, building it to 16-7 with three kills from Kendall Quirk and Katelyn Schmitt. Brenna McAlister tried to keep the Titans close, having a pair of kills, helping the Titans pull within 16-10. Jayci Graeve made it 16-11 but East Sac responded, going up 20-12, then 24-14 for their biggest lead of the match. A Brenna McAlister kill gave the Titans momentum in set two but East Sac quickly responded, going up 3-2. The Raiders stretched the lead to 10-5 with kills from Addisen Ehler, Kendall Quirk and Katelyn Schmitt with two. Brenna McAlister cut it to 11-7 and Jayci Graeve snapped a 2-0 rhn by East Sac with a kill by Addisen Ehler. The Graeve kill made it 13-8. The Raiders pushed the lead back to 17-9 but Nicole Meyer had two aces, followed by a kill from Brenna McAlister. East Sac responded with four of the next six-points to lead 21-15. Addisen Ehler ended the set with a kill. 

South Central Calhoun jumped out 2-0 in set two with Brenna McAlister serving a couple tough serves, getting the Raiders out-of-system. Jayci Graeve had a couple of kills, keeping the Titans up 4-2. The lead grew to 8-4 but Katelyn Schmitt and Addisen Ehler pulled the Raiders within 8-7. South Central Calhoun held them off, going up 13-8. The Raiders kept chipping away, tying the set at 16 with a 4-0 run. They grabbed their only lead of the set with a kill from Addisen Ehler, leading 17-16. Brenna McAlister had back-to-back kills and South Central Calhoun led 18-17. The set was tied at 19 but the Titans scored six of the final eight-points. Emerson Ludwig put the Raiders up for good in set four with an early kill, making it 2-1. The Titans tied the set at 7 but Katelyn Schmitt made it 9-7 East Sac with a kill. The Raiders pushed the lead to 15-9, maintaining a three to five point lead until Addisen Ehler had a kill and a block to push them to the limit of a win. Emmerson Ludwig stopped a 3-0 Titans run with a kill and Addisen Ehler ended the match with a kill a point later. 

Addisen Ehler led the Raiders with 23 kills with Katelyn Schmitt with 11 kills. Ehler had a team high 15 digs with Ella Wilson with 11 digs, Katelyn Schmitt 10 digs and Jordin Carroll had 8 digs to go with 42 assists. Kendall Quirk and Emerson Ludwig both had 3 blocks. 

Brenna McAlister and Jayci Graeve both had 15 kills for South Central Calhoun with Blair Schleiman adding 5 kills. Norah Riedesel had 37 assists with Jayci Graeve leading them with 12 digs, Alexa Holm and Macie Dorman both had 9 digs. Jayci Graeve, Sadie Wheelock, Kaitlyn O’Neill and Blair Schleisman all had 2 blocks and Nicole Meyer had 2 aces. 

The Raiders improved to 18-8 overall and 8-2 in the TLC with a trip to Alta-Aurelia on Thursday. South Central Calhoun slipped to 23-9 and 7-2 in the TLC. They host Sioux Central-Sioux Rapids and Newell Fonda on Thursday.

Glidden Ralston had their three match winning streak snapped with a home loss to Woodbine. The Wildcats played well in all three sets, dropping two close ones to begin the match. They swung well with Lauren Hulsing finishing with 13 kills and Ally Sommerfeld hitting .375 and Allison Snyder hitting .250, helping the team hit .112. The back row averaged 15.7 digs per set, helping them have a chance late in set one, losing 25-20 and set two, falling 25-22. Ashlynn Tigges paced the back row with 11 digs with Allison Snyder and MaKenna Wiederien both having 8 digs. They served aggressively, finishing with 7 aces with MaKenna Wiederien and Kassidy Wenck both having 3 aces. They served an 89.7% efficiency. 

The loss drops the Wildcats to 9-13 overall and 3-5 in the Rolling Valley Conference. They are off until next Saturday at the Rolling Valley Conference Tournament at West Harrison.
