Brincks Exteriors Sports Report: Carroll Falls to Heelan in 4th Quarter

Bishop Heelan scored 14-points in a 0:26 stretch in the 4th quarter to open up a close game, putting it away with a pick 6 with 4:06 left to win a big district matchup. The Tigers had battled back late in the 1st half and to start the 2nd half to grab their only lead of the game but the defense wore down against the Crusaders balance on offense. Kasen Thomas ran for 164-yards on 23 carries with four touchdowns but the key for Bishop Heelan may have been Noah Conley going 10-14 passing for 248-yards with a touchdown and a deep pass to Anthony White that set up the go-ahead touchdown in the 3rd quarter.

Carroll moved the ball in the 1st half but struggled inside the Heelan 40-yard line, turning the ball over on downs on their first-three drives. All of them ending in Crusaders territory. Heelan struck early with Noah Conley hitting Anthony White down the sidelines for a 61-yard touchdown with 6:38 left in the 1st quarter. The extra-point was missed and Carroll trailed 6-0. Carroll had a 7-play drive on their opening possession, ending at the Crusaders 40. That set-up the Crusaders opening score as they punted on three-plays on their opening drive. Carroll went 9-plays on their second drive, but faltered and turned it over on downs at the Crusaders 24-yard line. Carroll’s defense forced a punt and Carroll started the 2nd quarter at their own 23-yard line, down 6-0. They marched down the field with Reece Ziegmann and Taidyn Peterson running well and Carter Essick hitting guys across the middle. The drive ate up nearly 6:00 but ended on downs at the Heelan 34-yard line. The Crusaders drove down field and kicked a 42-yard field goal by Dylan Karnes, going up 9-0 with 2:22 left in the half. Carroll looked in trouble on a late drive in the half, facing 4th down in their own territory, they ran a fake to Reece Ziegman who ran 54-yards, setting Carroll up at the  6-yard line. Taidyn Peterson scored with 0:28 left in the half and Carroll trailed 9-7 at half.

The Tigers started the 2nd half with the ball at the Heelan 45-yard line after a great kick return from Treyvin Childress. Carroll moved the ball into the red zone and Carter Essick found Reece Ziegmann in the flat for a 9-yard touchdown, putting them up 14-9 with 9:01 left in the 3rd quarter. It didn’t take long for Heelan to answer. Noah Conley hit Anthony White down the sideline, setting the Crusaders inside the Tigers 5-yard line. Kasen Thomas scored on a 3-yard run, putting Heelan up 17-14 with 8:37 left, capping a 3-play drive. After a pair of punts, Carroll drove into Crusaders territory but just missed a 39-yard field goal. Heelan responded with Kasen Thomas breaking free for a 35-yard touchdown run with 11:10 left in the game. Carroll muffed a pooch kick and Heelan recovered it with 11:08 left and scored in 2-plays with Thomas scoring on a 5-yard run, making it 31-14 with 10:52 left. The Tigers didn’t budge, fighting back with a strong drive that was capped with a Taidyn Peterson 1-yard run with 8:50 left. Carroll trailed 31-21 and needed a stop. Heelan controlled the ball, going on a 9-play drive, capped on a 15-yard run by Kasen Thomas with 4:06 left. Carroll was down 38-21 and needed to go quickly. Carter Essick took a hard tackle on a tough snap and was intercepted on the next play but Thomas who took it for a touchdown and Heelan went on to win 45-21.

Reece Ziegmann had a good game with 8 carries for 108-yards and 4 catches for 57-yards and a touchdown, Taidyn Peterson had 89-yard rushing with a pair of touchdowns. Carter Essick ended the game with 121-yards passing with a touchdown.

The Tigers suffer their first district loss, falling to 1-1 and 4-2 overall. They travel to Sergeant Bluff-Luton on 93.7 KKRL on Friday.
