The Carroll Tigers fall short in their home opener to a good Gilbert team. Carroll played great in the second half, shutting down Gilbert’s rushing attack. The Tigers scored to open the game as Carter Essick four Reece Ziegmann for a 78-yard touchdown to give Carroll an early 6-0 lead. Gilbert would add a touchdown towards the end of the first quarter as they took a 7-6 lead into the second. Defensively, Carroll was outstanding in the second quarter, creating a turnover and stopping Gilbert’s offense. Essick and Ziegmann each added a rushing touchdown in the second quarter as Carroll would lead 18-7 at the half. Coming out of the locker room, Gilbert would score a touchdown to cut into the lead at 18-15. The Tigers would lead going into the fourth quarter. In the final quarter, Gilbert’s rushing attack came to life as they added three touchdowns. Carroll would go on to lose to Gilbert 36-18.
The Tigers had just over 300 yards of total offense in the loss. Carter Essick averaged over 20 yards a completion through the air. Essick was 10-16 for 232 yards and a touchdown. Taidyn Peterson was Carroll’s leading rusher despite only playing one half. Peterson recorded five carries for 39 yards on the ground. Reece Ziegmann was explosive in the passing game, as he caught four passes for 132 yards and a touchdown. Owen Klocke also added three catches for 57 yards. Defensively Michael Rowedder and Quinten Polking each had seven tackles in the loss. Carroll falls to 1-1 with the loss to start the season. The Tigers are back at home on Friday against Denison-Schleswig on 1380 AM/ 95.1 FM KCIM.
