Brincks Exteriors Sports Report: Carroll Controls the 4th Quarter in Win Over Greene County

Carroll took charge early, then pulled away late as Greene County rallied to earn their first win in the season opener. The Tigers pounded the ball on the ground, rushing the ball 43 times for 331-yards, scoring four of their five touchdowns on the ground. The defense added a score, while holding the Rams to 127-yards passing and 125-yards rushing.

The Tigers took their opening drive down the field, scoring on a quarterback sneak from the 2-yard line to lead 7-0 with 8:36 to play in the 1st quarter. Ty Muhlbauer added to the Tigers lead, intercepting the Rams and returning it 28-yards for a touchdown, pushing the lead to 14-0 with 2:37 left in the 1st quarter. The Rams struck quickly, getting back in the game with an 82-yard touchdown to Broc Stream, pulling within 14-8 at the end of the 1st quarter. Nick Stream tied the game for Greene County late in the 2nd quarter, scoring on a 47-yard run with 4:39 left. The game was tied at 14 at half with the Rams having the momentum.

The teams traded scores to start the 3rd with Reece Ziegmann scoring on a 4-yard run to put the Tigers up 21-14 but the Rams scored on their next possession with a 4-yard touchdown pass, tying the game at 21 late in the 3rd quarter. The Tigers felt going into the game they could wear the Rams down with their depth. It appeared to work with Carroll taking charge in the final stanza. Reece Ziegmann scored with 8:27 left, running in from 3-yards to put the Tigers up 28-21. Taidyn Petersen extended the lead to 34-21 with a 47-yard run with 5:46 left. The Tigers defense pitched a shutout in the 4th quarter allowing the Tigers to start the season 1-0.

Taidyn Petersen led the ground attack with 191-yards on 17 carries with Reece Ziegmann adding 79-yards and a pair of touchdowns on 11 carries. Carter Essick had 65-yards on 13 carries with a touchdown. Essick was 3-7 passing for 36-yard with Owen Klocke catching a 22-yard pass. Ty Muhlbauer led the defense with 6 tackles along with returning an interception 28-yards for a touchdown.

Carroll hosts their home opener on Friday Vs Gilbert.
