Audubon Vs Van Meter- Class 2A Championship Game

Audubon battled back and led the game going into the bottom of the 6th before falling to Van Meter in the championship game. The Wheelers nearly pulled off another magical comeback in the 7th inning, getting back-to-back base hits but this time Van Meter made the play to end the game. The Wheelers finish the season at 30-5, taking 2nd place in Class 2A. Riley Miller, Jordan Porsch and Taryn Petersen were all named to the All-Tournament team.
The Bulldogs struck in the 2nd inning as Audubon had their first turnovers in the State Tournament. Consecutive errors allowed the Bulldogs to score an unearned run. Audubon, as they have all season responded in the 3rd inning. Mattie Nielsen was hit-by-pitch to lead off and moved to 2nd base on a sac bunt by Taryn Petersen. Jordan Porsch singled with the ball hitting 2nd base and staying in the infield, forcing Nielsen to stop at 3rd base. Porsch stole 2nd base a few pitchers later and both would score. Nielsen took off from 3rd as the ball snuck away from the catcher. Cali Richards tried to throw to Madeline Waldorf who was covering at the plate. The ball got away, allowing Porsch to score. The Wheelers were up 2-1 and chase Waldorf out of the circle in the 3rd inning. Mattie Nielsen reached on a fielder’s choice in the 4th inning and scored on a double by Taryn Petersen and Audubon led 3-1.
Van Meter held the Wheelers the next two innings but couldn’t get anything done against Riley Miller. They stranded a runner on 2nd base in the 4th but didn’t have their first hit until the 4th inning. A walk to start the bottom 5th and the third Wheeler error started a Bulldog rally. They scored twice to tie the game at 3 but Mattie Nielsen threw out Finley Netten at the plate to end the 5th on a ball hit to centerfield. Audubon went down in order in the 6th and Van Meter took advantage. Kennedy Wiedman singled and scored on a 2-run home run by Mady Schnell. Schnell hit the walk-off home run in the bottom of the 8th to beat East Marshall in the semifinals. Jordan Porsch had a 2-out single and Riley Miller singled, putting Wheelers on 1st and 2nd with 2-outs but a ground ball to 3rd ended the game.
Mattie Nielsen scored a pair of runs, Taryn Petersen doubled, driving in a run and Jordan Porsch had a pair of hits with a run scored. Riley Miller and Addie Hocker both had a hit. Miller took the loss, going 6 innings, allowing 5-hits and 3 earned runs with 7 strikeouts.
The Wheelers finished the season 2nd in Class 2A.
