Brincks Exteriors Sports Report: Remsen St. Mary’s Outlast Newman Catholic In 14 Inning Thriller

The first of two 1A semifinals had two storied programs face off as Newman Catholic took on Remsen St. Mary’s. In the top of the first inning, Remsen was able to get a baserunner on by an error on the shortstop but was unable to push the run across the plate. Both pitchers settled into the game early as we would be tied at 0-0 going to the home half of the second inning. Newman Catholic got their first baserunner in the bottom of the second on a hit-by-pitch, but a double play quickly ended the inning as we would stay tied 0-0 going into the third. Neither team was able to score in the third inning. The game would stay tied at 0-0 going to the 4th. Remsen was able to record the first couple of hits in the ball game. Both came with two outs in the top of the fourth inning but St. Mary’s was unable to push a run across. Remsen was able to strike first, and in the top of the first inning, Collin Homan picked up an RBI single to give St. Mary’s a 1-0 lead.

Newman Catholic was able to get a couple of runners on base in the home half of the fifth on walks. A sac bunt from Kellan Kantaris brought in the tieing run to make the score 1-1 going to the sixth inning. St. Mary’s bats woke up as the game went on as they would take the lead back in the top of the sixth on two hits to lead 3-1. The game continued to be back and forth. Newman Catholic was able to tie the game back up in the home half of the sixth as they scored two runs on four hits to make the score 3-3 going to the seventh. In the top of the seventh inning, Remsen would take the lead right back as they recorded three hits in the inning. Braxton Kneip brought in the go-ahead run to make the score 4-3. Having to play catch up most of the game, Newman Catholic was able to send the semifinal match up to extras as they tied it at 4-4 going to the 8th inning. Neither team scored in the eighth inning, and we would go to the ninth still tied. The game would go into a slight rain delay before the ninth got started. After the postponement, Remsen would go in order, and the game would stay tied, going to the home half of the ninth at 4-4. Newman Catholic was able to get the winning run to second in the bottom of the ninth, but they were unable to score.

To start the tenth inning, Remsen St. Mary’s was able to get the go-ahead run to second but did not bring him in to score, as we would stay tied 4-4 going to the home half.  Dalton Klein would strike out three Newman Catholic hitters in the bottom of the tenth to keep the game tied 4-4 going to the eleventh inning. Neither team scored in the 12th inning as both teams continued to fight hard. Newman Catholic gets the winning run to third in the home half of the 13th but could not score him as the game would remain tied 4-4. Remsen came up big in the top of the 14th inning as they would plate three runs on three hits. Remsen would send Newman Catholic in order in the home half as they would go on to win 7-4.

With the win, St. Mary’s Remsen advanced to the state championship game on Friday at noon. Newman Catholics’ season ended at 31-6. Full stats for both teams are below.
