Riley Miller was unhittable and a freshman and sophomore came up huge in the bottom 7th, helping propel Audubon to the State Softball Tournament for the first time in school history. Miller struck out 12 in the game, including 9 in a row as she struck out the side in the 2nd, 3rd and 4th innings. She allowed no-hits and had only one Ram reach base in the game. Sophomore Anna Larsen singled to leadoff the 7th inning, taking 2nd base when the ball was bobbled in left field. She advanced to 3rd base on a wild pitch. Two Wheelers had popped up on the infield with Larsen at 3rd and Freshman Taryn Petersen came to the plate. She was 0-3 with a fielder’s choice against Mya Gosler, who had pitched a strong game with help from her shortstop Makynlee Yockey, who had made several big plays to keep the Wheelers scoreless through six innings. Petersen knew she couldn’t hit the ball at Yockey or the inning would be over and the game would go extra innings. Petersen came up clutch, hitting a ball in the hole between 3rd and shortstop. Yockey back handed the play and only had one chance as Larsen was too far down the 3rd base line. She fired to first base but Petersen was fast enough to beat it out, sending the Wheelers racing onto the field as they advance to the State Tournament.

Audubon threatened several times in the game, having Gemini Goodwin at 2nd base in the 3rd inning, Lucy Stanerson was on 3rd base in the 4th inning with 1-out, the Wheelers had 2-runners on base in the 5th innings and 6th inning when Yockey took the force play to 3rd base with 2-outs to end the Wheeler threats. The finally broke through in the 7th. MVAOCOU only had one runner all game and Brylei Clausen reached 3rd base with no-outs in the 4th inning. Miller got a popup to Addie Hocker at 2nd base, then a great catch by Michelle Brooks on a bunt that was a line drive over her head as she was crashing in from 3rd base. She made a tremendous catch for the 2nd out. Miller then caught a popup down the 3rd base line to end the threat.

The Wheelers finished the game with 8-hits with Mattie Nielsen and Michelle Brooks each having 2. Brooks led off the 5th inning with a double but was forced out at 3rd to end the inning. Taryn Petersen had a base hit with the game winning RBI. Anna Larsen singled and scored the game winning run. Alexis Obermeier and Addie Hocker both added a base hit. Riley Miller allowed no hits and no walks with the only baserunner reaching on an error. She struck out 12.

The Wheelers improved to 27-4 and will play Tuesday at the State Softball Tournament with the opponent to be determined with a few games rained out on Monday night. All the Wheelers State games will be broadcast on 93.7 KKRL.
