Coon Rapids Bayard received another strong pitching performance from Kolby Culbertson and took advantage of CAM struggles on defense to cruise to a 11-0 win in 5-innings on Saturday, advancing into the Sub-State Final against St Mary’s, Remsen on Tuesday.
After a slow start in the 1st inning, stranding a runner on base the Crusaders got on the board in the 2nd inning. Parker Hays earned a walk to leadoff the 2nd and scored on a single by Caden Oswald. Jace Baker and Cal Heydon walked with 2-outs and Oswald and Baker scored on a CAM error, giving Coon Rapids Bayard a 3-0 lead. Tyler Mohr singled, scoring Cal Heydon and the Crusaders were off and running with a 4-0 lead going into the 3rd inning. Parker Hays reached on an error and Mason Culbertson singled in the 3rd and both scored to put the Crusaders up 6-0 entering the 4th inning. Kolby Culbertson was in control on the mound for Coon Rapids Bayard. He allowed a leadoff single to start the game, then got the next six batters out. CAM got a single to start the 3rd by Ty Heydon picked the runner off at 1st base. Culbertson allowed five baserunners through 4 innings before Max Shirbroun pitched the 5th inning. Coon Rapids Bayard had ten batters at the plate in the 4th innings, collecting 3-hits. Three walks and a hit-by-pitch helped them score 5-runs, pushing the lead to 11-0. Max Shirbroun pitched the 5th, allowing a walk and a Crusaders error to put two runners on base but he induced a pair of infield popups and struck-out the final batter to end the game.
Tyler Mohr, Ty Heydon, Parker Hays, Caden Oswald, Mason Culbertson and Jace Baker all had a hit. Parker Hays scored 3-runs, Cade Behrens had a pair of RBI, Caden Oswald and Mason Culbertson both scored twice. Jace Baker added an RBI and scored a run. Kolby Culbertson earned the win, allowing 3 hits and striking out 4 in 4 innings.
The Crusaders will play St Mary’s, Remsen on Tuesday in Cherokee on 93.7 KKRL for a trip to the State Baseball tournament.

A grand-slam home run in the 5th inning gave OABCIG enough breathing room and put Kuemper in a hole they weren’t able to dig out as the Knights fall 8-4, ending their season 17-18. Kuemper scored a pair of runs in the 4th inning, pulling within 4-2 but Jaxx Dejean cleared the bases in the bottom 5th with grand slam that put the Falcons on top 8-2. The Knights tried to rally in the 7th inning, scoring a pair of runs but their rally fell short.
The Falcons took the early lead, scoring 4-runs in the 2nd inning. They had 4-hits in the 2nd inning, highlighted by a triple from Jaxx Dejean, scoring a pair of runs. The inning started with a walk and a hit-by-pitch and three of the four-runs scored with 2-outs. Ethan Loew singled to start the 4th inning for Kuemper and Evan Loew doubled, putting runners at 2nd and 3rd. Tristan Janson grounded out but scored Ethan Loew from 3rd base and Evan Loew scored on a bunt single by John Boes. The Knights had some momentum and kept it by stranding two Falcons on base in the bottom 4th. Kuemper loaded the bases in the 5th inning with Carter Putney singling and Ethan Loew and Evan Loew walking but they stranded all three runners on base. OABCIG got a 1-out single in the bottom 5th, followed by a fielder’s choice and back-to-back hit-by-pitches to lead the bases. Jaxx Dejean hit a grand slam home run and the Falcons lead grew to 8-2. Ethan Loew tripled for Kuemper in the 7th with 2-outs, scoring Benicio Lujano and Evan Loew singled to score Ethan but the rally ended on a ground ball to the pitcher.
Ethan Loew went 3-3 at the plate with a triple, an RBI and scored twice. Evan Loew had a pair of hits, including a double, drove in a run and scored. Tristan Janson and John Boes both had an RBI.
The loss ends the Kuemper season at 17-18.
