Brincks Exteriors Sports Report: Carroll Softball Knocks Off Heelan

Softball Postseason Results Thursday, July 11th

Carroll At Bishop Heelan- Class 4A Region 3

Carroll 5

Bishop Heelan 3

Carroll earned a hard-fought win on the road on Thursday, taking the lead early and holding on over the final few innings as Heelan tried to rally. The Tigers defense was nearly flawless, they got timely hits, were aggressive on the base paths and Averi Burke was tough in the circle. The win advances Carroll in the Regional Semifinal on Saturday at Dallas Center-Grimes, who had a bye in the quarterfinals.

Parker Adams opened the game getting hit-by-pitch on the first pitch of the game. She stole 2nd base, setting the tempo for the Tigers aggressiveness on the bases all game. Kloee Jones followed the Adams walk with a bunt single, moving Adams to 3rd base. Emma Kuhlmann drove her in with a base hit to the 2nd baseman. Kylie Gengler was able to jump and knock it down but wasn’t able to make the catch, allowing Kuhlmann to reach base with a base hit. Jones moved to 3rd on the play and scored on a passed ball moments later. Heelan tried to answer in the bottom half, scoring a run on 3-hits but Amanda Wardell made a couple plays in left field and the Tigers lead 2-1. Carroll had a chance to extend the lead in the 2nd inning with 2-runners on and 2-outs but they were picked off base ending the threat. They made up for it in the 3rd inning. Kloee Jones led off the inning with a single, followed by a single from Averi Burke. Emma Kuhlmann doubled, scoring Jones and Amanda Wardell hit a sac fly to left field to score Burke. The Tigers were up 4-1 and Averi Burke and the defense were controlling the Crusader bats. Bishop Heelan had runners on base in the 2nd and 3rd innings but Burke induced a popup on the infield in the 2nd inning and a force out at 2nd base helped end the threat in the 3rd inning. Marin Overmohle was outstanding defensively at 3rd base, making big plays in the 3rd and 4th innings. A Averi Burke leadoff single in the 5th (Carroll had the leadoff runner on in four of the first-five innings) led to an insurance run. Emma Kuhlmann drove Burke home with a base hit and Carroll led 5-1. Heelan responded in the bottom half. Shannon Cleary singled and Izzy Laffin followed with a single. Both scored on a double by Kambrie Fulton. Carroll got out of the inning up 5-3. After Carroll went in order in the 7th, Heelan tried to rally in the bottom half. Averi Burke fielded a grounder in the circle for the 1st-out but Shannon Cleary singled. A fly out to center made it 2-outs by Cleary made it safely to 2nd base on a ground ball to shortstop and the Crusaders had runners on 1st and 2nd with 2-outs. A ground ball to Tahlia Hahn at 2nd base ended the game, giving Carroll a 5-3 win.

Emma Kuhlmann had 3-hits with 2 RBI and a double. Kloee Jones added a pair of hits and scored twice while Averi Burke had 2 hits and scored twice. Burke got the win, allowing 8 hits and 3 earned runs in 7 innings. Marin Overmohle had a strong night at 3rd base, adding a base hit.
