Brincks Exteriors Sports Report: Kuemper, CRB Advance. Carroll Ends Regular Season

Kuemper Vs Pocahontas Area At Ida Grove- Class 2A District 14

Kuemper held on to advance with a hard fought win on Tuesday, moving into the District Final against OABCIG, which edged SE Valley on Tuesday, winning 10-9. The game was tight most of the game with two lead changes and a tie. The Knights struck first in the bottom 3rd with Mason Knerl singling and Carter Putney getting on with a bunt single. Ethan Loew grounded out, scoring Knerl and Evan Loew doubled to score Putney. The lead was short lived as a pair of errors ignited the Indians in the 4th inning. Carter Putney gave up a hit and  walk but then Kuemper had a pair of miscues, one allowed a run to score and the second error moved a runner up a base when they had a chance to get an out. Pocahontas Area took advantage, scoring 4-runs, highlighted by a 2-run home run by Blake Bunda, putting them up 4-2. Kuemper answered in their half of the 4th. John Boes walked to start the inning and Josh Langel was hit-by-pitch for the second time. Mason Knerl singled again keeping the momentum going. John Boes, stole 3rd and scored on an throwing error, putting Kuemper up 5-4. Ethan Loew walked to score Langel and the Knights tied the game at 4 after four innings.

Pocahontas Area stranded 2-runners on base in the 5th and Kuemper took advantage. Tristan Janson ignited the offense with a double and scored on a ground out by Charles Mayhall, scored Janson and Langel scored when Benicio Lujano walked. Kuemper took a 6-4 lead into the 6th. The Indians took advantage of three straight walks and a single to cut the deficit to 6-5. Carter Putney kept the Knights in the lead, throwing a runner out trying to score from 2nd base on the hit and Mason Knerl induced  a pop up to end the inning. The Knights responded with a run in the bottom 6th, extending the lead. Evan Loew singled and scored on a throwing error. The insurance run was almost needed in the top 7th. Pocahontas Area got a 2-out single from Adam Marsh and nearly had a 2-run home run by Karson Welander, but it was just foul. Knerl forced a groundout to Benicio Lujano at 3rd to end the game.

Carter Putney, Evan Loew and Mason Knerl all had 2 hits with Loew doubling, driving in a run and scoring a run. Ethan Loew added a pair of RBI with Carter Putney and Tristan Janson both doubling. Mason Knerl pitched the final 1 2/3 innings, allowing a walk.

The win improves Kuemper to 17-17 and they will head to OABCIG on Saturday in the District Final on KIKD 106.7.

IKM-Manning at Coon Rapids-Bayard- Class 1A District 3

The Coon Rapids-Bayard Crusaders picked up another win in the class 1A playoffs as they picked up a victory over IKM-Manning on Tuesday. IKM-Manning came out of the gates aggressively in the first part of the game. CRB never panicked when they fell down early, and they were able to come out on top. In the top of the first inning, Ross Kusel led the game off with a double for the Wolves. Kusel and Lane Sams would come around to score in the inning as IKM-Manning would take an early 2-0 lead. In the home half of the second, Cal Heydon and Kolby Culbertson both singled to start the inning. Only one run would come across as Heydon scored on a passed ball. The Crusaders would cut into the lead at 2-1. In the bottom of the second inning, CRB would tie the game at 2-2 on an RBI double from Cal Heydon. The Crusaders would eventually take a 3-2 lead going to the third inning. Kolby Culbertson settled in on the mound in the middle innings, striking out eight of nine batters faced in the third, fourth, and fifth innings. Coon Rapids-Bayard started the home half of the fifth off with a solo home run by Tyler Mohr. CRB would go on to score three times in the fifth and added two more in the sixth as they would go on to win 8-2. 

As a team, the Crusaders recorded 11 hits, with three going for extra bases. Cal Heydon recorded a multi-hit game, going 2-3, with a double and an RBI. Tyler Mohr was 2-4 with a home run and two RBI. Parker Hays had a three-hit game, going 3-4. Kolby Culbertson picked up the win on the hill, going five innings, giving up one earned run on two hits while striking out nine batters. For IKM-Manning, they recorded two hits. Ross Kusel was 1-2 with a double. Jace Starman recorded the other hit, going 1-3. 

With the loss, IKM-Manning’s season ends at 15-14. With the win, the Crusaders improved to 21-11. CRB advances to take on CAM on Saturday at home in a district final matchup.

Carroll At Perry- Regular Season

Carroll suffered their second straight heartbreaking loss, where they thought they had tied the game late. The Tigers had to rally with Perry scoring 3-runs in the 2nd inning and a run in the 3rd inning. Carroll started the rally in the 4th inning with Landon Petersen hitting an RBI, double and Jackson Gross singling, driving in a pair of runs. Carroll trailed 4-3 going into the bottom 4th. Perry stretched their lead with 4-runs to go up 8-3. The Tigers responded right away, scoring 4-runs in the 5th inning. Ryan North scored on wild pitch and Jake Jorgensen tripled, scoring 3-runs. Tate Schleisman nearly tied the game at 8 but was called out at home on a bang-bang play.

Jackson Gross had a pair of hits with 2 RBI and took the loss, going 2 2/3 innings with 4 hits and 4 earned runs. Landon Petersen had a double, a RBI and scored twice and Jake Jorgensen tripled, driving in 3-runs. Ryan North had 2-hits and Stone Sibenaller tripled and scored. Tallon Crandall pitched 3 1/3 innings, allowing 4 hits and no earned runs.

The loss drops Carroll to 8-18 as they head to Harlan on Friday for opening round of Districts on KIKD 106.7.
