The Kuemper Knights picked up a win on Saturday as they hosted their annual classic. The Knights scored in every inning and did a good job putting pressure on the Pocahontas defense. Kuemper led the whole game, but things got interesting in the late part of the contest. The Knights were able to plate one run in the bottom of the first inning when Benicio Lujano came in to score on a wild pitch. Another run was added in the second inning for Kuemper on an RBI single from Mason Knerl as the lead would grow to 2-0. Landon Pottebaum started the game on the hill and held Pocahontas scoreless through the first two innings. The Indians would cut into the Kuemper lead in the third, making the score 2-1. The Knights opened the game up in the home half. In the third inning, John Boes had a two-RBI triple, and Josh Langel recorded an RBI single as the lead would grow to 5-1 for Kuemper. Both teams scored a run in the fourth inning, and the score would moved to 6-2.

Pocahontas did not score at the top of the fifth inning. In the home half, Kuemper was able to add a couple of more runs to extend their lead to 7-2. The game started to get interesting in the sixth inning. In the top of the sixth, Pocahontas was able to score five runs as they sent nine batters to the plate and cut it to a one-run game at 8-7. The Knights responded in the home half as they scored four runs. All four runs came across for Kuemper with two outs, and they would go on to win 12-7.

As a team, the Knights recorded 11 hits. Josh Langel was 2-2 with a double and four RBI in the win. John Boes picked up two RBI triple for the Knights. Mason Knerl had a multi-hit game, going 2-3 with an RBI. Benicio Lujano was 2-4 with a couple of runs scored. Aaron McDermott was 2-4 with an RBI. Carter Putney recorded the other hit for Kuemper. The Knights would take on Woodbine in the second game of the invitational.

The Knights met up with Woodbine for the Kuemper Classic Championship as both teams defeated Pocahontas Area earlier in the day. The Tiger had just finished a convincing win rode the momentum into the game with Kuemper. They had five hits in the first-two innings combined, scoring 4-runs and stranding 2 more runners on base. That would come back to  haunt them late as the Knights settled in, shut down the Tigers over the final five innings, holding them to one hit. The Knight bats were held in check early as Cal Pryor pitched well, giving up one hit through four innings. Kuemper came alive in the 5th, starting their rally to a Classic Championship.

The first-four batters for Woodbine got on base to start the game, helping them score a pair of runs in the 1st inning. The top of the 2nd inning wasn’t much different with Cal Pryor doubling and Gunner Wagner singling. A ground out scored the first run and a base hit followed by a sac fly put the Tigers up 4-0. Kuemper left two runners on in the 1st and 2nd innings before finally breaking through in the 5th. They sent nine batters to the inning with Carter Putney ripping a 1-out double to start the rally. Benicio Lujano singled followed by a walk from Evan Loew and a hit-by-pitch from John Boes. Josh Langel doubled, driving in a pair of runs and Aaron McDermott singled to score Langel, giving Kuemper a 5-4 lead. A 1-out single by Putney in the 6th helped the Knights get a pair of insurance runs on a 2-run home run by Benicio Lujano. The Tigers had three base runners over the final two innings but didn’t score.

Benicio Lujano had a pair of hits, including a 2-run home run and Carter Putney and Aaron McDermott both had 2 hits. Putney doubled and scored twice with Josh Langel adding a pair of RBI and a double. Evan Loew earned the win, going 6 innings, allowing 6 hits and 3 earned runs.

The Knights are 11-12 overall and head to Clarinda for a doubleheader 0n Monday.

Coon Rapids Bayard earned a huge win in a matchup of two teams that could meet in the Class 1A District 4 Finals. They met in the Brent Prange Classic on Saturday at Ankeny Centennial and Coon Rapids Bayard set the tempo from the beginning. They took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the 1st and never trailed. Woodbury Central tried to rally but Coon Rapids Bayard was too sharp at the plate. The Crusaders were patient, working out 12 walking. The extra base-runners kept pressure on the Wildcats defense and pitchers. Coon Rapids Bayard led 5-4 going into the bottom of the 5th after the Wildcats scored twice in the top half. They added a run to extend the lead, then slammed the door closed with a 6-run bottom half of the 6th. Cade Behrens and Kolby Culbertson had RBI-doubles.

Nobody had more than 1 hit for the Crusaders with Cal Heydon, Kolby Culbertson and Cade Behrens all doubling and Ty Heydon and Caden Oswald singling. Cal Heydon scored 4-runs and eight 0ther players scored once. Cade Behrens went 4 1/3 innings, allowing 7 hits and 4 earned runs while Max Shirbroun pitched the final 2 2/3 innings, allowing 4 hits and 2 earned runs.

The win improves the Crusaders to 14-9-1 going into their game at CAM on Monday.
