Coon Rapids Bayard and Carroll At Carroll Invitational

The Carroll Tigers opened their lone Saturday tournament with an exciting game against Saydel. The game went to extra innings. Both pitchers started strong, as it was a low-scoring contest. Linkin Weitl started on the hill for Carroll. He sent Saydel down in order in the top of the first. Carroll came to bat in the home half. The Tigers were able to score two runs off a couple of errors to take an early 2-0 lead. Carroll led for most of the game. Saydel went in order at the top of the second. The Tigers were able to load the bases in the home half but could not push a run across and would hang on to a 2-0 lead. Neither team scored in the third. Saydel would cut into the Tiger lead in the fourth inning, plating one run to make the score 2-1. Saydel took their first lead of the game in the fifth at 3-2 off of two hits. Carroll would tie the game at 3-3  in the fifth on an RBI single by Landon Petersen. Going to the bottom of the seventh, Carroll would load the bases with no out and were unable to score as the game would head to extras tied 3-3. Saydel took advantage of a walk and error to score three runs in the top of the eight to go on and beat Carrol 6-3.

The Tigers recorded nine hits as a team, with only one going for extra bases. Landon Petersen has done an excellent job of putting the ball in play since being placed in the Carroll lineup. Petersen was 2-4 with an RBI and picked up a stolen base. Ryan North was 2-3 with a run scored and a walk. Tate Schleisman, Chase Ragaller, Jake Jordensen, and Trey Tassell all recorded a single in the game. Jackson Gross was 1-4 with a triple and a run scored.
With the loss, Carroll would take Coon Rapids-Bayard in the third-place game.

The Coon Rapids-Bayard Crusaders struggled to throw strikes as they would fall in their opening game at the Carroll Invitational to Algona. The Crusaders walked 11 Algona hitters in the matchup. Algona opened the game up with three runs in the top of the first inning to take an early 3-0 lead. CRB cut into the lead as they plated one run in the home half to make it 3-1. The Algona lead would continue to grow as the game went on. The Bulldogs would score two in the second and added another run in the fourth to make it 6-2. The Crusader’s second run came in the third inning off an RBI single from Tyler Mohr. Algona would score seven runs to CRB’s one run over the last two innings as they would go on to beat the Crusaders 14-3.

The Crusaders struggled at the plate, recording only three hits. Tyler Mohr was 2-3 with an RBI and a run scored. Cade Behrens recorded the other hit for the Crusaders. Jace Baker picked up an RBI on a groundout. With the loss, Coon-Rapids-Bayard will take on Carroll in the third-place matchup.

3rd Place Game 

Coon Rapids Bayard Vs Carroll

Carroll took charge late in the 3rd place game against Coon Rapids Bayard, taking their first lead in the 4th inning, then running away to a 6 inning win. The Crusaders looked strong early but struggled to throw strikes and make plays on defense over the final three innings. They finished with 6 errors and walked 7 batters and hit 2 more. Carroll took advantage of all the mistakes, scoring 7-runs in the 4th inning, 3 in the 5th and 5 more in the 6th to blow open a tight game.

Coon Rapids Bayard scored twice in the 1st inning thanks to a pair of Carroll errors. Carroll cut into the deficit in the 2nd inning with Stone Sibenaller walking and Trey Tassell running for him. Tassell scored on a sac fly by Tate Schleisman. The Tigers tied the game in the top 3rd when Ryan North reached on an error and scored later in the inning on another error. The Crusaders went back ahead in the bottom 3rd. Kolby Culbertson and Cal Heydon walked and scored with Parker Hays bunting Culbertson in and Heydon scoring on a single by Cade Behrens. Trey Tassell shut the Crusaders down the rest of the game, allowing only one hit over the next two innings. Carroll offense got rolling in the 4th inning with Tate Schleisman singling to start the 1-out rally. Ryan North kept it going with a 2-out hit-by-pitch and Chase Ragaller singled to drive in a run. Jake Jorgensen singled and Landon Petersen and Jackson Gross both had RBI walks, setting the stage for Trey Tassell. He came to the plate with the bases loaded and 2-outs and ripped a triple to deep right field, scoring all 3-runners on base. Tassell scored on a wild pitch as Carroll scored 7-runs to take a 9-4 lead. Ryan North added an RBI single in the 5th and Carroll extended the lead to 12-4 with 3-runs. Carroll added 5-runs on 5 hits with 2 Crusaders errors in the 6th, blowing the game wide open. Jackson Gross pitched the 6th for Carroll, getting Coon Rapids Bayard in order, ending the game.

Tate Schleisman and Ryan North had a team high 3 hits each with Schleisman scoring 3 times and North tripling, driving in 3-runs and scoring 4-runs. Chase Ragaller had a pair of RBI, Jackson Gross scored twice and Trey Tassell earned the win, going 5 innings, allowing 4 hits and 2 earned runs with 5 strikeouts.

Parker Hays, Caden Oswald, Ty Heydon and Cade Behrens all had a hit for Coon Rapids Bayard with Cal Heydon scoring twice. Behrens and Hays had an RBI each and Kolby Culbertson stole 3 bases.

The Tigers moved to 3-7 after Saturday and will host Winterset on Monday. Coon Rapids Bayard fell to 8-7-1 and will travel to Exira-EHK on Monday.
