Brincks Exteriors Sports Report: Area Baseball Teams Go 1-3 on Tuesday with 2 Tight Losses

On Tuesday, the Kuemper Knights picked up their first win of the season with a victory at home over Treynor. The Knights’s offense started hot as they picked up five runs in the first inning, sending nine batters to the plate. Mason Knerl was fantastic on the mound for the Knights. Knerl went over five innings for Kuemper, striking out six. Treynor added a run at the top of the second to cut into the Knights’ lead. Kuemper would come to bat in the home half of the third inning, leading 5-1. In the bottom of the third, the Knights scored one run to extend their lead to 6-1. Ethan Loew picked up the lone hit in the inning and came around to score. The Knights’ lead would continue to grow with two more runs in the fourth inning, making the score 8-1. Kuemper capitalized on Treynor’s errors and a couple of walks to advance runners on the base paths most of the game. Treynor never quit, as they would cut into the Kuemper lead again in the top of the sixth. Treynor scored three runs in the sixth off of a couple of hit-by-pitches and a walk. Kuemper would add another run in the home half of the sixth and go on to win 9-4 on Tuesday.

As a team, Kuemper recorded eight hits. Ethan Loew led the way, picking up three hits in four plate appearances. Loew also recorded a double for the Knights in the sixth inning. Carter Putney also had a multi-hit for the Knights, picking up two, and one went for extra bases. Mason Knerl pitched five and one third innings tonight for Kuemper striking out six along the way. With the win, Kuemper improved to 1-1 on the season. The Knights are back in action on Wednesday against Lewis Central.

Audubon had a chance to score in the 3rd inning with the game scoreless, they had a runner on 2nd base with 1-out but weren’t able to push the run across the plate, stranding Ely Jorgensen at 2nd. The Wheelers pitching and defense kept digging themselves out of holes until the 5th inning when Griswold broke through, scoring 4-runs. The Tigers left the bases loaded with 1-out in the 1st inning, stranded a runner at 2nd in the 2nd inning, left a runner at 3rd in the 3rd inning and had a runner at 2nd in the 4th inning. Every time Griswold threatened in the first-four innings Audubon dug dep. Carson Meaike pitched a big strikeout and induced a fielders choice to end the threat in the 1st, got another strikeout, followed by a groundout to 1st in the 2nd. The Wheelers picked a runner off 2nd base to end the 3rd inning and Meaike struck out two straight in the  4th. Bode Wyman was dominant for the Tigers on the hill, holding Audubon to one hit through 4 innings. He finished the game with 15 strikeouts. Griswold used a leadoff walk, a pair of base hits and aa Wheeler error in the 5th to push 4-runs across the plate. They blew it open in the 6th, scoring 5-runs on 1-hit with a pair of Wheeler errors and help from two walks and two hit-by-pitches. Audubon tried to fight back in the 6th, down 9-0. Brody Schultes had a one out single, moved to 2nd on a passed ball, went to 3rd on a balk and scored on a bases loaded walk to Adam Obrecht. The Wheelers had the bases loaded in the 6th but weren’t able to add any more runs. Griswold added two insurance runs in the 7th.

Brody Schultes went 1-4 and scored a run while Ely Jorgensen doubled and Adam Obrecht had an RBI. Carson Meaike and Carson Wessel combined to allow 8 hits and 11 runs with 6 earned. They walked 8 and hit 4 with 12 strikeouts.

The Wheelers fall to 0-2 and will host Earlham on Monday.

Both teams finished with 5-hits on Tuesday but Ankeny Christian Academy was able to take advantage better than the Crusaders who had four-doubles among their five hits. The Eagles struck first, scoring a run in the 5th inning, then added 3 more in the 6th to give themselves some cushion. Coon Rapids Bayard was hurt by 18 strikeouts, though their pitching finished with a combined 11-strikeouts and didn’t give up an extra base hit. ACA was able to work out eight walks, giving themselves extra baserunners to utilize. Coon Rapids Bayard didn’t have a walk or a hit-by-pitch.

Cal Heydon, Cade Behrens, Caden Oswald and Mason Culbertson all doubled while Ty Heydon had a base hit. Kolby Culbertson took the loss, going 4 1/3 innings, allowing 4 hits and 1 earned run with 9 strikeouts.

The loss drops Coon Rapids Bayard to 1-2 as they prepare to host Ogden on Monday.

It was an outstanding pitching dual in Fort Dodge on Tuesday in the season opener for South Central Calhoun and St Edmond. St Edmond broke through in the 3rd inning, scoring Max Nguyen on a hit-by-pitch with the bases loaded. The Titans held the Gaels to a pair of hits but had six walks and five hit-by-pitches. St Edmond was just as good on the mound, allowing one hit, walking four and hitting one batter. The Titans weren’t able to get a bounce when they had runners on base. The early Gaels run held up and they won 1-0.

Kaden Dorman had the lone hit for South Central Calhoun with Andrew Anderson walking twice. Charlie Nattress went 3 innings, allowing 2 hits with 2 walks and 2 hit-by-pitches. Halas Stieg went 2 innings, taking the loss while allowing no hits and an unearned run with 3 walks and 3 hit-by-pitches.

The loss to start the season put the Titans at 0-1. They host Woodward Granger on Friday.
