2024 Girls Wrestling Rewind Reads

2nd Team 

Laura McCarville- Audubon- Sophomore 

McCarville started the season very strong, taking 2nd at the Western Iowa Tournament and the Treynor Wrestling Tournament in November. She followed that up with a strong December. Laura finished 4th at the Audubon Tournament, was 5th at Riverside Tournament and 3rd at the Western Iowa Conference Tournament before the Holiday Break. Injuries slowed her season after the break, taking 5th at the LoMa Invite and 4th at East Sac’s Tournament. She finished the season with 11 wins by fall. 

 

Sunny McGowan- Carroll- Junior 

McGowan had a strong season for the Tigers, one of the reasons they had a tremendous season. She got rolling in December, taking 2nd at the Audubon Tournament, then going 2-0 at the Wolves Tournament. McGowan was 3rd at the Saydel Invitational before finishing 2nd at the Raccoon River Invite and taking 3rd at the Kuemper Tournament all before the holiday break. She kept wrestling well after the break, going 3-1 at Valkyrie Invitational. Sunny wrapped up the regular season taking 3rd at the East Sac Tournament. She had 20 wins by fall this season. 

 

Emma Grossman- Carroll- Sophomore 

Grossman qualified for State and used the experience as a chance to grow and get better. She finished a strong season for Carroll with 12 wins by fall. One of those wins by fall is what clinched her trip to the State Tournament, finishing 4th at the Qualifying meet with a quick pin. She started the season well, taking 4th at the Wolves Tournament, then went 2-1 at the Saydel Invitational. She missed part of the season in December but came back wrestling well. She took 3rd at the Valkyrie Invite in her first tournament back. 

 

Olivya Mack- East Sac- Sophomore 

Mack was the top wrestler for the Raiders for most of the season. She took 4th at the Lady E-Hawk Invite to open the season, following it up with a 2-0 record at the Manson NW Webster Invitational. She finished 5th at the Audubon Tournament and was 3rd at the Michelle Jensen Memorial. Mack was 6th at the Ogden Tournament and the SBL Tournament. She had 15 wins by fall this season. 

 

Kyra Wolterman- Kuemper- Senior 

Wolterman wrapped up her career with her best season, finishing with 19 wins by fall. Wolterman was at her best over the final month of the season, going 2-0 at the Nevada Round Robin, taking 2nd at the WCV Invitational and 4th at the Valkyrie Invitational. She nearly made state, finishing 5th at the Regional Qualifier, winning that match by fall. Kyra wrestled well early in the season, taking 2nd at the Treynor Invitational, 4th at the Audubon Tournament, 6th at the Riverside Tournament and earning a pair of wins at the Kuemper Tournament. 

 

Kourtney King- South Central Calhoun- Sophomore 

King had a strong year for the Titans, highlighted with a championship at the Manson NW Webster Invitational. She took 5th at the Audubon Tournament, was 2nd at the Spencer Tournament and at the Michelle Jensen Memorial. She ended the regular season with a 5th place finish at the Valkyrie Invitational. She had 12 wins by fall. 

 

Meia Hefley- South Central Calhoun- Freshman 

Hefley helped provide depth throughout the lineup for the Titans, giving them a strong freshman season. She went 2-0 at the Manson Invitational and was 5th at the Audubon Tournament. She kept showing growth with a 3rd place finish at Spencer Tournament, then went 2-1 at the Michelle Jensen Memorial. Hefley closed out the early part of the season with a 5th place finish at the Kuemper Tournament. She came out of the break rolling, taking 3rd at the Ogden Tournament and won the Valkyrie Invitational. She had 22 wins by fall. 

 

1st Team 

Jamie Pierce- East Sac- Senior 

Pierce was a tremendous story for the Raiders this season, joining the team after the season started, having never wrestled before. She worked extremely hard and put in a lot of mat time and it paid off. Pierce was one of the top wrestlers in the area over the final weeks of the regular season, earning a spot at the State Tournament with a 3rd place finish at the Regional Qualifier. Pierce didn’t get a win at State, but wrestled well in both matches, drawing praise from people covering the tournament. She took 5th at the Boone Invitational in her first ever tournament and followed it up with a 5th place finish at the SBL Invitational. She improved quickly, taking 2nd place at the East Sac Tournament before taking 3rd at the Regional Qualifier.  Pierce ended the season 11-8  on the mats with 10 of her wins coming by fall. 

 

Sadie Smith- Kuemper- Sophomore 

Smith took a nice step forward as a sophomore, wrestling her best late in the season, earning a State Tournament berth. She earned a win by fall at the State Tournament, taking away valuable lessons. Smith took 3rd at the Treynor Invitational and was 6th at the Riverside Tournament.  She took 5th at the Fort Dodge Tournament, then finished 3rd at the Kuemper Tournament. That sparked her going into the holiday break. She was 3rd at the WCV Invitational and 2nd at Valkyrie Invitational. She qualified for 3rd at the Regional Qualifier. She ended the season with 25 wins by fall. 

 

Grace Hoffman- Kuemper- Senior 

Hoffman battled through injuries that kept her on the sidelines late in the season to qualify for State and have good success on the mats at State. She earned a win by fall at the State Tournament. Hoffman was strong early in the season, taking 2nd at the Ridge View Invitational, followed by a 2-0 record at the Treynor Invitational. An injury in early December at the Audubon Tournament kept her off the mats until late January. She came back and finished 3rd at the Valkyrie Invitational, then dominated the Regional Qualifying meet with all 3 of her wins by fall as she won the Qualifier. She had 10 wins by fall. 

 

Emma Daniels- Carroll- Sophomore 

Daniels was as consistently good as any wrestler in the area, finishing her season with a 2-2 record at the State Tournament. She opened her season with a strong showing at the Central Iowa Kickoff with a 3rd place finish and kept rolling from there. She was 2nd at the Audubon Tournament before winning the Wolves Tournament and finishing 2nd at the Saydel Invitational. A 5th place finish at the Kuemper Tournament ignited her, bouncing back to win the Valkyrie Invitational and going 2-1 at the East Sac Tournament. Daniels advanced to state with a 3rd place finish at the Regional Qualifier. She ended the year with 23 wins by fall. 

 

Kloee Jones- Carroll- Senior 

Jones put together a strong senior campaign, advancing into the semifinals of the Regional Qualifier. She was one of the Tigers top wrestlers all season long, taking 4th place at the Central Iowa Kickoff and 2nd place finishes at the Audubon Tournament and Wolves Tournament. She took 5th at the Saydel Invitational and kept her run of placing at every meet going with a 3rd place finish at the Raccoon River Invite. Kloee took 4th at the Kuemper Tournament, then had a strong showing at the Valkyrie Invitational with a 3rd place finish. She closed the regular season with a title at the East Sac Tournament. She had 28 wins by fall. 

 

Brianna Kiger- Carroll- Sophomore 

Kiger was a strong wrestler for Carroll, giving them another young wrestler to build around in the future. She had 20 wins by fall this season, advancing into the quarterfinals at the Regional Qualifier. She started the season with 7 wins in her first 8 matches with 5 of those wins by fall. She was 3rd at the Audubon Tournament and went 2-1 at the Wolves Tournament. Brianna kept wrestling well with a 2nd place finish at the Saydel Invitational. Kiger won the Kuemper Tournament and was 3rd at the Raccoon River Invite. She closed the regular season with a 2nd place finish at the East Sac Tournament. 

 

Averi Burke- Carroll- Senior 

Burke had another tremendous year, which was slowed by an injury around the middle of the season. She is one of the elite wrestlers in the area, going 2-2 at this year’s State Tournament. Burke was aggressive on the mats, always looking to attack her opponent and score points while looking for a pin. Averi was 11-3 to start the season, taking 4th place at the Central Iowa Kickoff and a 2nd place finish at the Audubon Tournament during that stretch. She won the Wolves Tournament with all 3 wins by fall, followed by a title at the Saydel Invitational. She won 13 matches in a row this season with the streak ending at the Valkyrie Invitational, where she finished 3rd. She was 2nd at the East Sac tournament and took 3rd at the Regional Qualifier. She ended her season with 24 wins by fall. 

 

Julia Kanne- Carroll- Senior 

For a second straight season, Kanne was the top finisher at the State Tournament from the local area. She went 3-2 at the State Tournament with 2 of her wins by fall. She is a student of wrestling and enjoys helping her younger teammates. Kanne is competitive and doesn’t like to lose, but respects her opponents and was always complimentary of them after the matches. Her season started strong with a 2nd place finish at the Central Iowa Kickoff and a 4th place finish at the Audubon Tournament. She added a 2nd place finish at the Saydel Invitational, then claimed her first title at the Raccoon River Invite. Kanne was 4th at the Kuemper Tournament and 2nd at Valkyrie Invite. She wrapped up the regular season tournament trail with a championship at the East Sac Tournament. She finished 2nd at the Regional Qualifier. Kanne ended the season with 24 wins by fall. 

 

Evelyn Kramer- South Central Calhoun- Senior–  1st Team and Wrestler of the Year

Kramer earned her second straight Rewind Wrestler of the Year honor with a dominating season to wrap up her career. She will take her talents to Buena Vista next season and is poised to have a tremendous career. She finished the season with 35 wins with 30 wins by fall. She won titles at the Ridge View Invitational, the Manson NW Webster Invitational, Spencer Tournament, Michelle Jensen Memorial, Boone Invitational and the Valkyrie Invitational. She added 2nd place finishes at the Audubon Tournament and the Kuemper Tournament. Then qualified for the State Tournament with a 2nd place finish at the Regional Qualifier. Kramer went 2-2 at the State Tournament with both wins coming by fall. She felt she let her second round match get away from her at the State Tournament. She won her first-eight matches, then won 12 matches in a row. After a loss, she added a 5 match win streak and an 8 match win streak. 

 

Coach of the Year

Samantha Vonnahme- Carroll

Vonnahme captained the best team in the area this season, sending 4 girls to the State Wrestling Tournament and helping to build a program that is just beginning to take off. Carroll was at its best this season at Invitationals and Tournaments. They won the Kuemper Tournament and finished 2nd at the Wolves Tournament and Saydel Invitational in back-to-back competitions. Carroll added a 2nd place finish at the East Sac Tournament to wrap up the regular season. They took 3rd place at both the Audubon Tournament and the Valkyrie Invitational.  The Tigers were 6-5 in duals this season. She earned her second straight Wrestling Coach of the Year from KCIM Sports Rewind.
