Kuemper Vs Grundy Center- Class 2A Sub-State 6 Final
Grundy Center 60
Kuemper 48
Kuemper played well on defense, holding Grundy Center below their season average but the Spartans used 15 offensive rebounds to earn their way to the State Tournament. Kuemper led early after Carson Kanne and Michael Kaspbauer hit a three each but the Knights only made 5-19 from beyond the arc as the Spartans length made it difficult to get good looks. The Knights weren’t out of the game until late when Brody Zinula was able to knock down free throws to help stretch the lead into double digits. Kuemper trailed by 1-point at the end of the 1st quarter, 2-points at half and were down 3-points going into the 4th quarter. Grundy Center exerted their physicality and length in the 4th quarter to outscore Kuemper 23-14.
Carson Kanne hit the first shot of the game, putting Kuemper up 3-0 with Michael Kasperbauer extending it to 6-2 moments later. Those would be the only 3’s Kuemper had in the 1st half as Grundy Center was able to flash out on the Knights shooters and they did a great job of keeping Brock Badding from getting free. Badding took 4 shots in the game, scoring in the closing minutes. Carter Putney kept Kuemper in the lead midway through the 1st quarter, scoring inside to make it 8-4. Grundy Center didn’t shoot well early but were getting multiple looks thanks to controlling the boards. They took their first lead at 9-8 but Michael Kasperbauer hit a pair of free throws, putting Kuemper up 10-9. The Spartans grabbed an 11-10 lead at the end of the 1st quarter. They began to stretch the lead in the 2nd quarter, using a 4-0 run to grab their biggest lead to that point. Michael Kasperbauer hit a free throw and Tregan Beiter scored inside to make it 15-13 Grundy Center. The Spartans pushed the lead to 19-13 but Hans Kraus pulled Kuemper within 19-15. A three gave Grundy Center the largest lead of the half at 22-15 but Tregan Beiter scored the final 5-points of the half and Kuemper was down 22-20.
Grundy Center opened the 3rd quarter with a 8-2 run, going up 30-22, their largest lead of the game. Jack Badding drained a 3 and Carter Putney scored inside and Kuemper fought back to 30-27. A Spartan 3 stretched the lead back to 6 and it went back and forth from 4 to 6 until Carson Kanne pulled Kuemper within 37-34 with a three late in the 3rd. The Knights were down by 3 when the 4th quarter started but Grundy Center went to their advantage and kept pounding it inside, building a 47-36 lead. Tregan Beiter hit a 3 for Kuemper, pulling them within 47-39 but Grundy Center went back up 51-39 and never saw their lead drop below 10 the rest of the game. Brody Zinkula hit several free throws down the stretch and the Knights weren’t able to get 3’s to fall. Grundy Center made it really difficult to drive and to score from the outside. The Knights finished with two offensive rebounds.
