Coon Rapids Bayard battled early foul trouble and turnovers against the unrelenting pressure Newell Fonda puts on a team, falling behind 16-1 to start the game and trailing 25-5 at the end of the 1st quarter. They settled in better in the 2nd quarter, slowing the pace, cutting down on turnovers and forcing the Mustangs to shoot from long range. Coon Rapids Bayard pulled within 33-16 but the Mustangs closed the half on a 7-0 run to hold their biggest lead of the game at half. Thoughts of coming back in the 2nd half were quickly squashed by Newell Fonda in the 3rd quarter. The Mustangs had made one 3-pointer in the 1st half, struggling from long range. They hit 7-3’s in the 3rd quarter, building a 65-25 lead as the game went to the 4th quarter with continuous clock. Newell Fonda ended the game hitting 12-3’s to 2 for the Crusaders.
Malia Clayburg hit a free throw for the Crusaders, pulling them within 3-1 in the opening minutes as both defenses were in control. The Crusaders were frustrating Newell Fonda inside and the Mustangs weren’t hitting from deep. Newell Fonda was creating turnovers as the Crusaders struggled to clear half court and when they did they struggled to find clean looks. Breeley Clayburg picked up her 2nd foul about 2:30 into the 1st quarter and the Mustangs took over inside, building a 16-1 lead before Malia Clayburg scored again, making it 16-3. Ella Heithoff scored a few minutes later but the Crusaders were down 21-5 late in the 1st quarter. Breeley Clayburg came back in the game to start the 2nd quarter and Coon Rapids Bayard settled in on both ends of the floor. Chipping away at the deficit with baskets from Aubrey Hofbauer and a 4-0 run by Breeley Clayburg. Ella Heithoff scored, pulling them within 31-14 and Breeley scored again to make it 33-16 late in the half. A 7-0 spurt to end the half, led by McKenna Sievers broke the game open.
The Mustangs opened the 2nd half, drilling 3’s, hitting seven in the 3rd quarter as Coon Rapids Bayard continued to struggle to score. Malia Clayburg made it 43-17 and 45-19 but Newell Fonda outscored the Crusaders 25-9 in the 3rd and led 65-25 going to the 4th quarter. Ella Heithoff hit a pair of free throws, Malia Clayburg added a three free throws and Mya Downing drained a 3 from the top of the key for the Crusaders in the 4th quarter but Newell Fonda added 4-3’s, outscoring Coon Rapids Bayard 15-8 to end the game 80-33.
Malia Clayburg had a team high 11-points with 6 rebounds and 3 steals. Breeley Clayburg added 10-points and 4 rebounds while Aubrey Hofbauer had 4 steals and Ella Heithoff dished out 3 assists and 7-points.
The Crusaders end the season 20-4.
