State Wrestling Results for Friday Morning Session, February 16th

Carroll had a tremendous season come to an end on Friday morning in the 4th round consolations. The Tigers won their first ever District Championship last week in Glenwood, sending a school record tying 8 to the State Tournament at Wells Fargo Arena. They had three wrestlers advance into Friday morning, with all three needing a win to qualify for the top 8 and a spot on the podium. All three guys wrestled well but came up short on Friday morning.

Cael Nelson led it off for Carroll, wrestling against Ragen Hasche of Central Lyon-George Little Rock at 138-pounds in the 4th round consolations. Nelson was in good shape but gave up a takedown and back points to end the 1st period, putting him in a 5-0 hole. He was the more aggressive wrestler but wasn’t able to get deep enough to get a takedown and ended up giving up a few more points, falling 7-1.

Cooper Ludwig at 150-pounds squared off against a famliar foe in Tucker Vithum of Ballard. They two had wrestled against each other at conference a few weeks ago with Vithum earning a win. Ludwig was on the mat wrestling before the Nelson match was done and came out well. He was up in the 1st period but gave up a takedown right at the end of the period and trailed 3-2. Ludwig got a takedown in the 2nd period, tying the match at 4. Ludwig went up 6-5 in the 3rd period and held the lead until Vitzhum got in on a single leg, lifting it up off the ground. He held Ludwig leg in the air until there was under 0:15 remaining, then took him down to take a 7-6 lead. Ludwig didn’t have time to score and fell 7-6.

Owen Klocke was the final wrestler on the mat for Carroll, going at 157-pounds against Taevyn Zinnel of Algona. Klocke fell down 2-0 but quickly scored to make it 2-1 at the end of the 1st period. He tied the match at 2, before falling down 4-2 in the 2nd period. Klocke again responded to tie the match at 4. With just over a minute to go in the 3rd period, Zinnel was nearly getting free and Klocke let him go for an escape. Klocke tried to get a few shots over the final minute, but Zinnel held him off. Klocke fell 5-4.
