Brincks Exteriors Sports Report: Kuemper, ESC and SCC Wrestling from Wednesday

State Wrestling Results for Kuemper, East Sac and South Central Calhoun Wednesday, February 14th 

It was a good 1st round for the area teams on Wednesday with Kuemper advancing three wrestlers into the 2nd round, East Sac took both and South Central Calhoun had one wrestler. Area wrestlers went 4-3 in matches in the 1st round.

Caleb Hoffman of Kuemper controlled his opening match, beating Ty Strode of Nodaway Valley 6-1. He advanced into the 2nd round against Eli Becerra of Missouri Valley. Becerra was able to get inside against Hoffman with some moves Hoffman hadn’t anticipated and earned a win by fall at 1:53. Hoffman will wrestle against Connor McLaughlin of Denver in the 2nd round consolations on Thursday. Bradyn Burns of East Sac won his 1st round match, getting out in front early and controlling Owen Becerra of Missouri Valley, winning by Fall in 3:07. Burns faces Ryan Groom in the 2nd round. Groom scored a quick take down and was able to build and early lead. Burns took down, hoping he could find success on the bottom but wasn’t able to escape, though he nearly had a cradle it before they went off the edge of the mat. Burns ended up losing by Tech Fall 17-2. He will wrestle against Jackson Colsh of Hudson on Thursday in the 2nd round consolations. Jake Irlbeck of Kumper at 157-pounds squared off with Nolan Kriegel of Iowa Valley, Marengo in the opening round. This was a strong matchup as both wrestlers were very good. Irlbeck fought hard but fell 4-2 and will wrestle in the 2nd round consolations on Thursday against Brogan Lake of Hinton.

Tate Bieret faced off with Ian Forsythe of Southwest Valley in the 1st round at 165-pounds. Bieret was in a battle before getting the upper hand in the 3rd period, pinning Forsythe at 5:15 to advance into the 2nd round. Bieret felt he won the hand fighting in the first match. He felt he needed to continue to hand fight well on Thursday after losing in the 2nd round to Jackson Kounkel of Hinton 6-2. Bieret will wrestle in the 2nd round consolations against Naylan Gulbranson of South Central Calhoun. Gulbranson squared off with Bode Stanley in the 1st round, losing by fall at 1:30. He sits 27-18 on the season going into his 2nd round consolation match on Thursday against Bieret who is 32-9.

Bryce Wiskus of Kuemper may have had the match of the day. He trailed Tate Frantz of West Branch 7-2 in the 3rd period before storming back. Wiskus got a takedown near the edge of the mat and a pinned was called but reversed after the officials discussed and it was called out of bounds. Wiskus trailed 8-7 with 0:27 left, then with under 0:08 left earned a takedown and back points to win 12-8. That advanced Wiskus into the 2nd round against Nathan Beitz of Maquoketa Valley who is ranked 2nd. Wiskus was taken down early in both the 1st and 2nd periods and lost by fall at 3:19. He will wrestle in the 2nd round consolations against Michael Fuller of ACGC who is 38-15. The final competitor in the 1st round was Coby Pierce of Kuemper at 215-pounds. Pierce gave up a quick takedown and trailed 4-0 before getting a reversal and nearly getting back points. He wasn’t able to get aggressive offensively the rest of the match, falling by Major Decision 17-4. Pierce takes on Aiden Heitland of AGWSR who is 32-5 in the 2nd round consolations on Thursday.

Charlie Veit of East Sac and Brock Nattress of South Central Calhoun both received byes in the 1st round. Veit advanced into the quarterfinals with a quick pin in the 2nd round against Auron Marsh of West Branch. Veit got a couple quick takedowns and won in 1:45. He takes on Boden White of Denver in the Quarterfinals. White is seeded 2nd and is 44-2 on the season. Nattress was in a high scoring affair against Carter Metcalf of Pleasantville. Metcalf kept going up by a couple points, but Nattress fought back each time to tie the match before giving up a late takedown in the 3rd period, falling 11-6. Brock falls to 48-6 on the season and will wrestle Isaac Messamaker of Moravia in the 2nd round consolations. Messamaker is 37-15 on the season after losing by Major Decision in his opening match.

Area wrestlers went 1-5 in the 2nd round, finishing 5-8 in matches for the day.
