Brincks Exteriors Sports Report: Audubon and Carroll Wrap Up Day One At State Wrestling

State Boys Wrestling Results Wednesday Morning Session 

Audubon and Carroll in 1st and 2nd Round Matches 

It was a rough start, a strong middle and tough finish for area wrestlers on Wednesday morning as the State Wrestling tournament got underway with matches in Class 2A. Eight of the nine area wrestlers competed in the 1st round with Cooper Ludwig receiving a bye into the 2nd round. Lane Elmquist of Audubon was the first wrestler to hit the mats at 113-pounds. Emquist battled in the 1st period and trailed when he got in trouble against Jessse Jens of Harlan. The two had met twice this season, including in the District Final with Jens having won them both. Elmquist had wrestled well last Saturday but was taken down in the 2nd period and lost by fall in 2:38. He will wrestle on Thursday morning against Kaliber Fry of PCM who went 1-1 on Wednesday and is 38-16 on the season. Becket Hagen of Carroll was making his first appearance at State, wrestling at 126-pounds. Hagen was taken down in the 1st period by Tyce Clarken of Humboldt and lost by fall in 1:01. He will wrestle again on Thursday morning against Charlie Showwalter of Hampton Dumont.

Levi Dirkx of Carroll was the second Tiger on the day. He faced Steele Diercks of Assumption at 132-pounds, losing by Tech Fall (17-0), Dirkx will wrestle again on Thursday against Aiden Hippen of Clear Lake, who was upset in the 2nd round. Cael Nelson turned the fortune for arear wrestlers, earning a win by fall at 1:44 vs Remington Fry of PCM in the 1st round. Nelson moved to 32-4 on the season and had to wrestle again in the 2nd round. Nelson faced Jordan Schmidt of Solon who stayed low, not allowing Nelson to be aggressive, taking his shots away. Schmidt held on for a 4-2 win. Nelson will wrestle again on Thursday in the 2nd round consolations against Tate Germann of North Fayette Valley.

Owen Klocke kept the winning streak going for Carroll at 157-pounds, earning a 8-5 win against Daniel Hyman of Ballard. The two had wrestled before and Klocke jumped out 8-0 before getting in trouble late and having to hold on as he was taken to his back. He fought out of trouble to preserve the win. Klocke moved into the 2nd round against Blake Wilson of Burlington Notre Dame. It was a tight match and he felt he had a few good shots but ended up falling 7-4. Klocke will wrestle on Thursday against Raif Baack of Clear Lake. Chase Ragaller of Carroll got off to a great start at 165-pounds against Ayden Antonelli of Anamosa. Ragaller built a 5-0 lead and looked in control but ran into trouble in the 3rd period and lost by fall at 5:10. Ragaller moved into Thursday match against Lance Helm of Albia.

Kieran Polking earned a hard-fought win for Carroll against Mason Allen of Clarion-Goldfield-Dows. Polking was down 7-1 and rallied to earn a win by fall at 4:59, advancing into the 2nd round. Polking was in a tight match against Rylan DeGroot of Western Christian, falling 4-2 to drop into the 2nd round consolation match on Thursday morning against Jayden Kreitlow of Eagle Grove. Quinten Polking of Carroll was impressive in his 1st round matchup against Jagger Luther of Creston. Polking dominated the entire match, winning by Major Decision 9-1. He advanced into the 2nd round against Ben Bryant of North Polk. Bryant is a strong physical wrestler, making it hard for Polking to get any shots. He felt he didn’t hand fight as well as needed but says he will learn from it. Polking lost 3-0 and will wrestle Thursday morning in the 2nd round consolations against Carter Moore of Fairfield.

Cooper Ludwig earned a bye in the 1st round and faced off against Talan Weber of Charles City. Ludwig wasn’t able to get inside and ended up losing by fall at 3:33 and will wrestle against Kollin Henry of Decorah in 2nd round consolations on Thursday.

Area wrestlers went 4-9 on Wednesday morning.
