It wasn’t a smooth start for Coon Rapids Bayard, though they led part of the 1st quarter and did a nice job getting GMG in foul trouble, they trailed 12-7 at the end of the 1st quarter. They struggled to make free throws in the 1st half but found themselves up at half by two at 21-19. Their defense was really good with Ella Heithoff having a terrific half and Malia Clayburg adding to her floor burns and bumps and bruises. The Crusaders dominated the 2nd half, outscoring GMG 16-0 in the 3rd quarter and 22-4 in the 2nd half. They cruised into a Regional Semifinal with a 20-point win. 

Breeley Clayburg scored easily in the post to start the scoring for the Crusaders, and they added a three to lead 5-0. GMG answered with five straight to tie the game, but the Crusaders edged ahead 7-5. The lead changed for the first time when GMG hit a three to go up 8-7. They extended the lead to 12-7 at the end of the 1st quarter. Ella Heithoff took over to start the 2nd quarter, scoring six straight points as the Crusaders went up 13-12. After a GMG bucket, the fouls began to add up for GMG, but Coon Rapids Bayard continued to struggle from the charity stripe. Malia Clayburg hit a free throw, tying the game at 15, then put the Crusaders up 18-15. Aubrey Hofbauer extended it to 19-15, and Coon Rapids Bayard took a 21-19 lead into the half. 

GMG foul trouble (2 players with 4 in the 1st half) took its toll as the Crusaders upped the pressure in the 3rd quarter. They blew the game open, outscoring GMG 16-0 to lead 37-19 going to the 4th quarter. The Crusaders didn’t let up defensively in the 4th quarter, cruising to a 43-23 win. 

Malia Clayburg had a black and blue double-double with 15-points and 12 rebounds to go with 7 steals. Ella Heithoff added 11-points and 5 steals, and Aubrey Hofbauer contributed 7-points and 4 steals. Lydia Hofbauer had 6-points and Breeley Clayburg pulled down 7 rebounds. 

The Crusaders improved to 19-3 and will host HLV on Friday on 93.7 KKRL. HLV topped NorthTame 51-47 to improve to 11-9 on the season.

The Kuemper Knight season comes to an end Tuesday night after a tough road loss to Sioux Central. The first part of the first quarter was back and forth. Sioux Central jumped out to a 6-0 lead, and Kuemper responded on the next possession to make it 6-2. The Knights would trail by ten early in the first quarter, 12-2, causing a timeout by Kuemper. Out of the timeout, Kumper went on a 5-2 run to make it a 14-7 ball game. Sioux Central closed the first quarter strong as they led 22-9 going to the second. Kuemper never led in the game and struggled against Sioux Central’s length on defense. The Knights would trail 41-15 at the half after being outscored 19-6 in the second quarter. Frannie Glynn was excellent all night long on the defensive glass, and that continued in the second half. The Knights still struggled on offense in the second half as they scored a total of 12 points in the half. The Knights would go on to lose 62-27.

Karsyn Overmohle was the Knights’ leading scorer with eight points. Elsa Tiefenthaler, Lauren Boell, and Aubrey Heuton each chipped in six points for Kuemper. Fannie Glynn pulled down a team-high 12 rebounds in the loss. As a team, Kuemper struggled on the glass, only pulling down 25 rebounds. With the loss, Kuemper’s season came to an end at 9-13.
