Girls State Wrestling Results Thursday, February 1st
Morning Session
It was a quick start to the morning on Thursday with three area girls all competing 1t 110-pounds. Grace Hoffman of Kuemper dropped her opening match, losing by fall in 2:25 to Abby Jager of Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont. Hoffman bounced back with a vengeance in her 1st wrestleback, defeating Allison Hoefling of Hinton by fall in the 1st period. Hoffman secured the win at 1:28. Evelyn Kramer of South Central Calhoun withstood a quick start from Sophia Harris and won her 1st round match by fall in a 1:09. Kramer was able to counter Harris initial attack. Kramer advanced into a 2nd round matchup against Abby Jager of Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont and battled hard but fell by fall at the 5:25 mark. Julia Kanne of Carroll was the third area wrestler at 110-pounds, winning her opening match by fall in 5:22 over Audra Coss of Wilton. Kanne advanced into the 2nd round but fell by fall in 1:27 to Laura Walding of Algona.
Sadie Smith of Kuemper wrestled in her first match at State at 120-pounds, qualifying as a sophomore. Smith battled hard but lost by fall at 5:19 against Lexa Rozevink of Ames. Smith came back in her 1st wrestleback, using her lessons from her first match and won by fall in 4:40 over Alanna Mahoney of Solon. Averi Burke of Carroll gave the Tigers two winners in the opening round, early a decision (4-0) over Maddy Jansen of South Winneshiek. The senior moved into the 2nd round against 4th ranked Isabella Deeds of Ridge View, losing by fall in 4:24. Burke says she took a lot from that loss she can use the rest of the tournament.
Jamie Pierce of East Sac, a senior who started her career this season after Thanksgiving and went on a tear after the Christmas break, qualifying for State. She battled Kasee Huss of MOC Floyd Valley. Pierce wrestled very well and had a chance, but Huss was able to get a late take down to edge her 8-6. Pierce moved into the 1st wrestleback against Allison Metschke of Ames. She lost by fall at 1:44 to end her tournament run. Emma Grossman of Carroll, making her first appearance at State, took on Libby Dix of Mount Vernon at 190-pounds, who was ranked 3rd in the 1st round, falling by fall in 0:35. She came back and wrestled well in her 1st wrestleback, nearly getting a pin at the end of the 1st period against Anna Steenhoek of Gilbert. Steenhoek held on to get it to the 2nd period, then defeated Grossman by fall in 2:41. Grossman wrapped up a strong season. Emma Daniel of Carroll competed at 235-pounds. She entered the meet wrestling very well with two matches previously against her 1st round opponent. She had been 1-1 vs Hayley Armstrong of SWAT. Daniels dropped her opening match by fall at 1:21. She bounced back nicely in her 1st wrestleback, winning by fall in 2:18 over Isabella Allen of Sioux City West.
Evening Session
The evening session with three local wrestlers and two of them facing off against each other in the 2nd wrestleback. Julia Kanne of Carroll and Grace Hoffman of Kuemper met for the second time this season and the match went back and forth. Hoffman had lead in the 3rd period but Kanne was able to tie the match, then got Hoffman in a tough situation and Kanne ended up winning by fall at 5:42. Evelyn Kramer of South Central Calhoun advanced with her second win of the day. She topped Laura Stohr of Algona by fall at 3:02 after building a 14-1 lead. Sadie Smith of Kuemper finished off a strong sophomore season, falling in her third match of the day, going 1-2. Smith lost 0:56 to Jordan Buffum of Missouri Valley. Averi Burke of Carroll earned her second win of the tournament with a 13-6 win over Ciara Gomez-Bryant of Cedar Rapids Kennedy. Emma Daniels gave Carroll their 3rd wrestler in the 3rd wrestleback with a win by fall in 3:18 over Amelia Sirola of Okoboji.
Evelyn Kramer of South Central Calhoun and Julia Kanne opened the 3rd wrestleback round at 110-pounds. Kramer suffered a disappointing loss, after building a lead, she was caught in a throw and was pinned at 3:08 by Karlena Buford of Midland. Kanne advanced with a 13-7 decision in a match she was never in trouble. Kanne defeated Makenna Kurth of Waukee, advancing to 4th wrestleback on Friday. Averi Burke left everything on the mat in her 3rd wrestleback, falling 4-1 to Morgan Streif of Bettendorf. Emma Daniels of Carroll was the final competitor of the night, falling in her last match by fall in 1:34. Daniels advanced a round furthur this season as a sophomore than last season.
