Coon Rapids Bayard used a 15-4 run in the 3rd quarter to open up a close game in which they trailed at half. Audubon came out hot, jumping to a 5-0 lead before Coon Rapids Bayard scored a couple minutes into the 1st quarter. The 1st half saw six lead changes and two ties as the Wheelers hit 7-3’s and Coon Rapids Bayard scored 8 buckets in the paint. The Wheelers pulled within 8-p0ints in the 4th quarter but Coon Rapids Bayard hit enough free throws and played hard on defense until the final horn, holding on for a 58-46 win.
Mason Steckler scored the first five points of the game, helping the Wheelers to a 5-0 lead. Cal Heydon drained one of the Crusaders two three’s in the 1st half, getting them on the board. Steckler knocked in his second three to start the game, helping the Wheelers maintain an early lead, up 8-3. He scored the Wheelers first 11-points with his third three in the 1st quarter. Caden Oswald knocked in a pair of free throws for Coon Rapids Bayard, pulling them within 11-7. That was followed by a buck from Cal Heydon and Gavin Heiderscheit, who tied the game at 11 at the end of the 1st quarter. Kolby Culbertson gave the Crusaders their first lead of the game with a bucket to start the 2nd quarter but Oliver Deist drained a three for Audubon, putting them back up 14-13. Austin Christensen extended the Wheelers lead to 18-13 with a pair of baskets inside, but Cal Heydon responded with 5-points in a row, tying the game at 18. Caden Oswald put Coon Rapids Bayard up 20-18 but Brody Schultes nailed a three for Audubon, retaking the lead at 21-20. Cade Behrens scored 5 in a row for Coon Rapids Bayard, giving the Crusaders a 25-21 lead. Mason Steckler and Brody Schultes hit back-to-back threes and Audubon was back up 27-25. The Crusaders hit a free throw, then made a steal but couldn’t capitalize at the buzzer and Audubon led 27-26 at half.
The game bounced back and forth in the 3rd as Cal Heydon and Cade Berhens scored for Coon Rapids Bayard, sandwiched around a bucket from Edward Miller. Behrens put the Crusaders up 30-29, before he extended it to 32-29 and 36-31. Aaron Olsen kept the Wheelers close with a bucket but Caden Oswald extended the Crusaders lead to 5, then Cade Behrens hit a big three, putting them up 41-33. Cal Heydon extended it to 43-33 but Austin Christensen made it an 8-point game going to the 4th. A Cade Behrens three to start the 4th blew the game open, giving them a 46-35 lead. Audubon pulled within 48-42 on a bucket by Austin Chrsitensen but Caden Oswald and Cal Heydon hit back-to-back shots for Coon Rapids Bayard and Audubon never got it under 8 the rest of the game as the Crusaders held Audubon to 19-points in the 2nd half in a 58-46 win.
Cade Behrens led the Crusaders with 22-points while Cal Heydon added 20-points. Caden Oswald and Parker Hays both had great all-around games, without having to score much. Oswald finished with 10-points along with 8 rebounds and 6 assists. Hays added 5 assists and 3 rebounds. Kolby Culbertson had a couple crucial buckets, finishing with 4-points.
Mason Steckler hit 4-3’s for Audubon, leading them with 16-points, followed by 10-points and 7 rebounds from Austin Christensen. Edward Miller was held scoreless in the 1st half, but finished with 9-points and 9 rebounds. Brody Schultes added 6-points off the bench.
The Crusaders are 1-0 and will host Ar-We-Va on 93.7 KKRL on Tuesday while Audubon opens the season 0-1 and will travel to Missouri Valley on Tuesday.
