Brincks Exteriors Sports Report: Kuemper Falls to Grundy Center but Plays with Gritty Effort

The Kuemper Knights wanted to give a gritty effort in the Class 2A Quarterfinals against Grundy Center and did. They trailed 6-1 in set one and 17-12, also trailed 24-16 in set four but never quit in either set, gaining momentum in set one that carried into a set two win, then rallied in set four to within 24-22 before falling 25-22. The Knights lost 3-1 but showed the state the heart and character they have. Kuemper hit .146 at the net and held Grundy Center to .166, even with Carlie Willis finishing with 28 kills. They didn’t want anyone else to hurt them and for most of the match, they didn’t. Ellery Luhring had a couple of kills on dumps as the setter that helped the Spartans keep momentum.

An Alivia Schenkelberg block in set one seemed to ignite Kuemper after they trailed 6-1. Kuemper pulled within 7-5 on a kill by Kaci Peter. Grundy Center went back up 13-8 but Peter and Frannie Glynn had kills, pulling them within 15-11. Kuemper stayed within 3-4 points the rest of the set but never was able to tie before Grundy Center closed the set on a 3-0 run to win 25-19.

Aubrey Heuton came out swinging in set two, putting the Knights up 1-0, but Grundy Center pulled ahead 2-1 and went up 3-1. Heuton added another kill, finishing with a team high 15. Her second kill of the match pulled Kuemper within 3-2, then Elsa Tiefenthaler tied it at 4 with an ace serve. The set was tied at 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9 before Grundy Center went back up 10-9. Kuemper had grabbed a brief lead at 8-7. Frannie Glynn kept the Knights close with a kill, making it 12-10. Kuemper rallied to and Kaci Peter gave them a 13-12 lead on a kill. Grundy Center tied it at 13 and went up 14-13. Frannie Glynn pulled the Knights even at 15 with a kill. Kuemper grabbed a quick lead at 16-15 and began to pull away. Lauren Boell, had a great game swinging out of right, put them up 18-15 and a Frannie Glynn ace put Kuemper up 21-16. The Knights went on to win 25-20 on a kill by Aubrey Heuton. The match was tied at 1-1 and Kuemper had momentum.

Grundy Center never trailed in set three, after taking an early 3-1 lead. Kuemper rallied to it it at 4 but the Spartans answered with a 3-0 run. The Knights would trail by as many as 8 but scored five in a row with a Frannie Glynn block starting the run, followed by another Glynn block, then a kill by Aubrey Heuton, an ace from Brianna Wittrock and a kill by Wittrock. Grundy Center stretched the lead to 22-15, then Kuemper showed their grit again. Kaci Peter had a kill; Frannie Glynn added a kill and Peter had another. Kuemper would lose set three, 25-19 but appeared to have momentum again.

The Spartans opened set four with a 2-0 run, but Aubrey Heuton had a pair of kills, and the Knights were down 3-2. Lauren Boell had a kill, tying it at 6, then Kuemper went up 7-6 for their first lead since the end of set two. Lauren Boell had another kill, making it 8-7 but the Spartans tied the set at 9 and took a 10-9 lead. Frannie Glynn put Kuemper back up with a kill at 12-11 but Grundy Center took the lead for good at 13-12. Kaci Peter pulled the Knights within 17-15 and Lauren Boell made it 19-16 but Grundy Center stretched the lead to 24-18. Frannie Glynn gave Kuemper some momentum with a kill, Lauren Boell pulled Kuemper within 24-21 and Kuemper squeezed out another point to trail 24-22. Grundy Center held on for a 25-22 win.

Aubrey Heuton led the Knights with 15 kills, Kaci Peter added 11 kills, Frannie Glynn and Lauren Boell each had 8 kills and Brinna Wittrock finished with 5 kills. Kaylie Simons took shot after shot from Carlie Willis in the back row, finishing with 22 digs with Wittrock and Elsa Tiefenthaler both having 11 digs and Brooke Rohe adding 10 digs. Alivia Schenkelberg and Brianna Wittrock both had 3 blocks and Wittrock added a pair of aces. Karsyn Overmohle and Elsa Tiefenthaler both had 19 assists.

Kuemper ends the season at 34-7.
