What looked like a defensive battle early with the first three possessions being a turnover on downs, turned into a rout as the Kuemper Knights turned four Clarinda turnovers into points and rolled to an easy win, though they were 324-yards to 243-yards. Jake Hausman recovered a fumble in the closing minute of the 2nd quarter and sprinted 82-yards untouched for a touchdown that completely blew the game open. Kuemper had built a 13-0 lead in the 2nd quarter but Clarinda was driving, using a strong rushing attack that gave them the ball at the 2-yard line with under a minute left in the half. A touchdown would have made it a tight game at half, but Clarinda snapped the ball past their running back, a player from each team dove for the ball, knocking it towards the 20-yard line. Jake Hausman scooped it up and took off running. Kuemper was in control at half, then put the game away with a touchdown to start the 2nd half. Kuemper passed for 185-yards and four touchdowns while running for 58-yards. Clarinda ran for 324-yards but didn’t complete a pass.
Kuemper’s second possession was quick. The Knights defense held Clarinda on downs at the Knights 39-yard line and Brock Badding went to work. He hit Ben Gerken down the right sideline on the first play, down to the Cardinal 31-yard line. On second down he found DJ Vonnahme open down the left sideline for a 31-yard touchdown. Kuemper was up 6-0 with 3:08 left in the 1st quarter. An interception early in the 2nd quarter set up the second Kuemper touchdown. Clarinda was moving the ball on ground on their third possession of the game. As they neared midfield they attempted a pass in the flat and DJ Vonnahme read it perfectly, jumping the passing lane and making the interception. His pick, gave the Knights the ball at the Clarinda 29-yard line. Brock Badding through the second of his four touchdowns, finding Michael Kasperbauer open in end zone after stepping up in the pocket. Kuemper led 13-0 with 9:54 left in the 1st half. Clarinda appeared to be ready to score late in the half, marching the ball down the field on the ground. They picked up a first down and had it at the Knights 2-yard line. They appeared to want to run some clock, to not allow the Knights too much time left in the half. A bad snap on the next play, set up a scramble for the ball, and it was still loose around the 18-yard line and Jake Hausman scooped it up and returned it 82-yards for a touchdown. The Knights took a 20-0 lead into half.
DJ Vonnahme nearly broke the 2nd half kickoff for a touchdown, but gave the Knights the ball at the Clarinda 39-yard line. Kuemper moved to the 1-yard line and Will Simons punched it in for a touchdown and the Knights had put the game out of reach. A Tate Bieret interception on the Cardinals first possession of the 2nd half, gave the Knights another short field and Brock Badding hit Michael Kasperbauer for a 27-yard touchdown, putting the game on continuous clock. The Cardinals snapped that on the first play of their next possession with a 69-yard touchdown run, cutting their deficit to 35-8. Kuemper answered back immediately with Badding hitting DJ Vonnahme for a 53-yard touchdown and Kuemper was able to get a 2-point conversion, making it a continuous clock again. Kuemper made a stop at the goal line with 5:26 left in the game and Ryan Sundrup recovered a fumble to close out the game.
