The Kuemper Knights punched their ticket to the State Volleyball Tournament for  the second year in a row, battling to a hard-fought 3-0 win over Ridge View. The Knights were in serious trouble in set one as Ridge View used a 10-0 run to take a 13-4 lead. Kuemper settled down, got aggressive and rallied to close the set on a 21-9 run to gain the momentum, propelling them to the win. Kuemper’s depth up front paid dividends as different Knights had big games swinging in each set. Lauren Boell ignited the Knights in the first set with a thunderous kill from the right side. The kill gave Kuemper momentum they hadn’t had prior. Aubrey Heuton and Frannie Glynn came on in set two, taking control as the Knights battled back to take the lead. Glynn was huge hitting the ball and her and Brianna Wittrock had big matches  blocking as well. Heuton and Glynn helped the Knights early in set two, then Kaci Peter took over during parts of the set. Karsyn Overmohle had back-to-back aces helping the Knights pull away in set two. Brianna Wittrock was critical for Kuemper in set three as the Knights took the lead for good midway through the set and held on late for the sweep. Kaylie Simons and Brooke Rohe both had strong nights in the back row. Elsa Tiefenthaler made a pair of crucial diving or leaping plays to keep Kuemper in control of the match. The match had 9 lead changes and 13 ties.

Kuemper took a 4-3 lead in set one on a block by Alivia Schenkelberg. Ridge View, which was playing with great confidence early took control as the Knights were not swinging aggressive at the net and were struggling with the Raptors serve. Ridge View went on a 10-0 run, taking a 13-4 lead. Kuemper scored on a Raptor error, pulling within 13-5. Elsa Tiefenthaler and Lauren Boell rotated into the lineup and Boell came out aggressive. She pounded the ball into the floor of the right side and Kuemper cut the deficit to 13-6. Her energy helped the Knights chip away at the deficit. Brianna Witrrock had a kill and Kaylie Simons served an ace, pulling Kuemper within 15-11. Aubrey Heuton had a 3 kills during a 5-point stretch, then Frannie Glynn pulled Kuemper within 17-15, 18-16 and 19-18 with 3 big kills. Glynn then tied the match at 20, then served an ace to put Kuemper up 21-20. Brianna Wittrock had a kill to make it 23-21 and Wittrock teamed with Lauren Boell for a block, ending the set at 25-22.

Frannie Glynn had a kill to put Kuemper up 2-1 in set two. They never trailed again. The Raptors hung close, keeping within 2-4-points as Kaci Peter heated up at the net for Kuemper, gaining her first kills of the night. She had 4 in the set. Kuemper led 16-13 midway through the set before Peter had a kill, followed by a kill from Aubrey Heuton and back-to-back aces from Karsyn Overmohle. The Knights were up 20-14 but Ridge View scored, trying to get on a run. Aubrey Heuton ended the run, having a pair of kills, putting Kuemper up 23-16. The Raptors answered with 3 straight points but Frannie Glynn scored to give Kuemper set point. Elsa Tiefenthaler ended the set with and ace and Kuemper led 2-0.

The Raptors have been a strong team all-season and weren’t going to to down without a fight in set three. The set featured five lead changes with Kuemper going up 11-10 on a kill by Elsa Tiefenthaler. It was tied 4 times early at 1, 2, 3 and 4. Kuemper looked to be pulling away when a kill by Brianna Wittrock extended their lead to 9-6 but Ridge View kept coming, tying the set at 9 and 10. Kuemper again edged away with Wittrock again put them up 13-11 with a kill. The Raptors pulled within 1 but Alivia Schenkelberg had a block and Aubrey Heuton had a big ace, putting the Knights up 16-12. Kaci Peter kept it at 4, with a kill, making it 17-13. Ridge View slowly chipped away with Brianna Wittrock having a kill to put Kuemper up 19-17. The Raptors answered again tying the set at 20. Wittrock put Kuemper up 1 with a kill, then Aubrey Heuton had a kill, making it 22-20. A Heuton and Wittrock block made it 23-20 but the Raptors pulled within 23-22. Brianna Wittrock came up with a big kill and a Frannie Glynn blocked sealed the Knights trip to Coralville.

Frannie Glynn had a monster game with 12 kills and 5 blocks. Aubrey Heuton added 9 kills with several in clutch situations. Brianna Wittrock had another great all-around game with 8 kills, 9 digs and 6 blocks. Kaci Peter added 7 kills, Lauren Boell had 3 blocks and the momentum changing kill in the first set. Alivia Schenkelberg had 3 blocks, Elsa Tiefenthaler added 15 assists with Karsyn Overmohle added 21 assists and 2 aces. Kaylie Simons added 21 digs and Brooke Rohe had a strong over night, finishing with 5 digs.

The Knights improved to 34-6, earning the 6th seed at the State Tournament. They open play on Tuesday at 4:25 against the 3rd seed in Grundy Center. The match will be played on Court Two on KIKD 106.7.
