The Kuemper Knights started off slow Friday night, but they picked up the pass in the second half as they advanced in the 2A playoffs. Cherokee started the game off with a 98 kick return for a touchdown to take a quick 6-0 lead. Both teams’ defenses started the game strong as Cherokee forced a Knight to put on their opening drive. After a defensive stop by the Knights, Kuemper got the ball back and, marched down the field and scored on a Brock Badding three-yard touchdown run to tie the game up at 6-6. Neither team scored the rest of the quarter, and the game was tied 6-6 going to the second quarter. Cherokee picked up their only offensive touchdown of the game after a trick play set up a touchdown pass, and the Braves took another lead at 12-6. As the second quarter was winding down, Kuemper took their first lead of the game when Badding found Michael Kasperbauer for a 73-yard touchdown as the Knights to a 13-12 lead at the half.
It was a hard-fought first half, and the Knights got the ball to start the third quarter. On the second half’s opening kickoff, Carson Kanne took it 80 yards to the house as Kuemper extended their lead 18-13. DJ Vonnahme had a tremendous second half, catching three touchdowns for Kuemper. Badding threw his second touchdown of the game when he hit Vonnahme over the middle of the field for a 34-yard touchdown, and the Knights took a 26-12 lead going to the fourth quarter. Cherokee took their second kickoff back to the house as they cut into Kuemper’s lead at 33-18. Kuemper scored two more touchdowns the rest of the game as DJ Vonnahme caught his second touchdown for Badding and another one for Kanne. The Knights would go on to win 47-16 after they outscored the Braves 34-6 in the second half.
Badding completed 14 of his 21 passes for 291 yards and three touchdowns. Carson Kanne was one for one for 32 yards and a touchdown. Kanne also had a total of 108 punt and kick return yards and a touchdown. DJ Vonnahme caught five passes for 100 yards and three touchdowns. Michael Kasperbauer also went over 100 yards for Kuemper. Kaspberbauer had four catches for 110 yards and a touchdown. Will Simons had a great day defensively for Kuemper, recording 7.5 tackles and two sacks. Junior Kent Sanders had seven tackles for the Knights, all of them being solo tackles. The Knights improve to 7-2 on the season as they advance to take on Clarinda at home. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00 on KIKD 106.7.
