Brincks Exteriors Sports Report: Carroll Volleyball Falls in 5 Sets on Tuesday

Carroll battled to the end, but came up 2-points shy of advancing into the Regional Semifinals, losing to Denison Schleswig in five on Tuesday. The Tigers came out sharp and were the more aggressive team, taking set one with a dominant serve and solid serve receive. Denison Schleswig turned the tables in set two, becoming the aggressive team, allowing them to tie the match at one set apiece. Both teams had chances in set three with six lead changes and 10 ties but Denison Schleswig edged away in the middle of the set with a 3-0 run. Carroll rallied but couldn’t retake the lead and the Monarchs went up two sets to one with a tight win 25-22. Carroll needed a good start in set four and got it, taking a 3-0 lead on their way to a 25-19 win to send the match to a fifth set. A quick start by Carroll put them up 2-0, but Denison Schleswig answered with a 4-0 run. Carroll reclaimed the lead two more times and tied the set eight times. The last lead for Carroll came at 14-13 but Denison Schleswig scored the final three points to win 16-14. The Tigers had so many different players step up and make a key play. Olivia Rowedder was strong with her block at the net, Mollie Feld and Emma Kuhlmann came up with clutch kills, Marasyn Wittrock made a great pancake and had several other diving digs, Averi Burke had a big service run in set two, that gave Carroll a chance. Amanda Wardell had a key block to change momentum in set two, freshman Analia Ayala had several big kills and Riley Nagl did a tremendous job getting her hitters good looks at the net and had well timed dumps from her setter position.

Olivia Rowedder was sharp for Carroll in the opening set, giving Carroll a 2-1 lead with her first kill. Carroll wouldn’t trail again as Rowedder patrolled the net defensively and Mollie Feld and Rowedder had big kills in a convincing 25-14 win. The Tigers serve kept Denison Schleswig out of system, forcing them to send over free balls that Carroll used. The Tigers began pulling away early, up 4-3, then pushing the lead to 9-3. Denison Schleswig never got closer than six the rest of the set.

Things changed in set two after Carroll went up 3-0 on a Olivia Rowedder kill. The Monarchs became the aggressive team, using their serve to get Carroll out-of-system. Denison Schleswig kept swinging at the net, reeling off five straight to take a 5-3 lead. Carroll wasn’t able to tie the set again though a Olivia Rowedder block pulled them within 18-16. They scored again and had a chance to tie but Denison Schleswig answered with a 3-0 run to lead 21-17. The momentum changed on a block by Amanda Wardell, pulling Carroll within 15-9. Carroll kept chipping away at the deficit until the late run by Denison Schleswig. The Monarchs won the set and tied the match at 1-1.

Denison Schleswig went up 2-0 in set three but Carroll went up 4-3 on a kill by Amanda Wardell that followed a block from Olivia Rowedder. The set was tied six times and changed leads five times before Denison Schleswig went on a 3-0 run, taking a 12-9 lead. Carroll fought back and tied it at 15 and again at 17 but couldn’t get the lead. Denison Schleswig used a 5-0 run to take a 22-17 lead but again Carroll had a chance after a block from Emma Kuhlmann and a kill by Analia Ayala, Carroll pulled within 22-21 and 23-22 but the Monarchs scored the final two points to win 25-22 and took a 2-1 lead.

Carroll didn’t let up in set four. The Tigers went up quickly with a kill by Olivia Rowedder, followed by aa ace from Emily Puck. Carroll led 3-0 and never allowed the Monarchs to tie the set. Riley Nagl, Mollie Feld, Emma Kuhlmann and Analie Ayala had kills, helping Carroll stretch the lead to 13-7. Rowedder made it 14-9 with a kill and Carroll kept the pressure on, pulling away for a 25-19 win on a kill by Mollie Feld.

Analia Ayala started set five with a kill and Carroll built a 2-0 lead but Denison Schleswig answered with a 4-0 run. Riley Nagl pulled Carroll within 4-3 and Carroll tied the set at 4 and 7 before Mollie Feld put them up 8-7 with a kill. Denison Schleswig answered with a 4-0 run, leading 11-8. The Tigers battled back, tying the set at 12, then again at 13. Analia Ayala put Carroll up 14-13 with a kill but Denison Schleswig forced a Tiger error to tie the set at 14. The Monarchs grabbed the lead 15-14 and held on to win 16-14 as the match ended with an attack into the net.

Analia Ayala led the Tigers with 10 kills with great balance behind her with Mollie Feld having 8 kills, Olivia Rowedder and Emma Kuhlmann both had 7 kills, Amanda Wardell finished with 6 kills and Riley Nagl had 5 kills to go with 31 assists. Marasyn Wittrock paced the back row with 24 digs with Averi Burke having 14 digs, Olivia Rowedder 13 digs and Nagl with 10 digs. Rowedder was a force at the net on defense with 7 of the Tigers 14 blocks. Emma Kuhlmann and Amanda Wardell both had 2 blocks. Rowedder also had a team high 3 aces.

The Tigers out hit the Monarchs .062 to .012 and held a 43-38 edge in kills. The Monarchs edged Carroll 6-5 in aces while Carroll won the block battle 14 to 5. Denison Schleswig had 94 digs to 76 for Carroll.

The Tigers season comes to an end at 6-25.
