LoMa At Audubon

Audubon 3

LoMa 0

25-9, 25-14, 25-22

Audubon trailed 1-0 in all three sets tonight but didn’t trail for much of the match, winning 3-0 as Mattie Nielsen went over 700 kills in her career, part of a senior night celebration that clinched 4th place in the Western Iowa Conference for the Wheelers. The Wheelers got a great team effort on Thursday as they rolled in sets one and two, but had to battle in set three, down midway through the set and tied at 22 before they scored the final three points to win. The Wheelers serve gave LoMa trouble most of the night as they finished with 10 aces. They added 5 blocks, but had a lot of touches at the net, finding a way to use that and free balls as LoMa struggled to be in system to get big nights at the net from Mattie Nielsen and Harlow Miller.

LoMa went up 1-0 in set one but Mattie Nielsen had three straight kills and Audubon was never pushed the rest of the set. Harlow Miller had a string of kills, putting the Wheelers up 13-6. They closed the set on an 11-0 run behind outstanding serving from Miller who had a pair of aces back-to-back to make it 24-9.

LoMa scored first in set two but Harlow Miller put Audubon up 2-1 and they would never trail again. LoMa tied the set at 2 but Mattie Nielsen has a pair of kills back-to-back, putting the Wheelers up 4-2. Audubon stretched the lead to 14-6 and closed it on a service run by Mattie Nielsen and a kill by Harlow Miller.

The third set was interesting as LoMa again took an early lead, only to have Audubon go up 2-1. This time the Panthers hung close, tying the set at 2, 3, 5,  and 6. It appeared Audubon would pull away, getting up 9-6 but the Panthers rallied to tie it at 10. LoMa took their second lead of the set and fourth overall at 11-10 and built it to 13-10. Audubon recovered and Anna Larsen served an ace, tying the set at 13. Mattie Nielsen had a kill, giving the Wheelers the lead again but LoMa tied it 14, then again at 18 and 19. Audubon built a 22-20 lead but the Panthers rallied to make it 22-22. Harlow Miller had back-to-back kills and Anna Larsen served an ace to end the match.

Mattie Nielsen led all hitters with 17 kills, going over 700 in her great career, that was shortened due to Covid during her freshman season, impacting the teams number of matches, then an injury claimed most of her sophomore year. She added 10 digs. Harlow Miller was also strong at the net with 13 kills and was really good at the service line with 4 aces. Addie Hocker distributed the ball really well, finishing with 30 assists to go with 8 digs.
