Audubon scored early and often, winning the Audubon County rivalry game at Exira-EHK. Evan Alt had 36-yard rushing entering the game. He had more than that on the Wheelers opening possession. Audubon ran for 388-yards and nine touchdowns on their way to their second win of the season. They jumped out quickly, leading 18-0 after the 1st quarter, then pulled away in the 4th quarter after the Spartans rallied to within 40-28 in the 3rd quarter. The Wheelers defense held the Spartans to 229-yards on the ground, with most of that coming in the 2nd and 3rd quarters. Exira-EHK passed for 178-yards as they had to play catchup in the late 3rd and 4th quarters.
Evan Alt exploded on the scene Friday, carrying the ball on both Wheelers plays on their opening drive. He ran for 11-yards on the first play, then scampered 28-yards for a touchdown on the second play. The Wheelers defense forced a punt after three Spartans plays and Alt showed his speed again. Alt scored on the Wheelers second play of the drive, out running the defense for a 65-yard touchdown, putting them up 12-0. Another three and out for the Wheelers defense got the ball in their offenses hands again and the Wheelers made quick work of it. Aaron Olsen scored on a 32-yard run, making it 18-0 with 6:30 left in the 1st quarter. The Spartans settled in offensively, establishing Jameson Kilworth on the ground. They marched down the field before turning it over on downs at the Wheelers 12-yard line. That sparked their defense as well, which held Audubon on a 4th down from the Wheelers 20-yard line. Exira-EHK took advantage of the short field, scoring on an 11-yard run by Kilworth, making it 18-6 with 11:11 left in the half. Audubon went back to Evan Alt on their next drive, with Alt scoring on a 26-yard run on the fourth play of the drive. The Wheelers were back up 26-6 with 8:51 left in the half. A Spartan fumble, recovered by Gabe Jensen, set up the Wheelers next score. Evan Alt exploded for a 55-yard run, making it 32-6 with 1:57 left in the half. Exira-EHK gained some momentum as they had been able to establish Jameson Kilworth running with a Cannon Hansen and Alex Hansen blocking in front of him. The Wheelers defense had done a nice job bending but not breaking in the 2nd quarter but Spartans found Quintin White for a 18-yard touchdown catch with 0:22 left in the half. They would get the ball to start the 2nd half, down 32-12.
Exira-EHK started the 2nd half were they left off the 2nd quarter. Jameson Kilworth led a 4-play drive, scoring on a 26-yard run, pulling them within 32-20. Evan Alt waisted no time getting the Wheelers the momentum again, scoring on a 38-yard run. The Wheelers did an outstanding job fielding pouch and onside kicks all game, giving them short fields to work with. The Alt touchdown extended the lead to 40-20 with 9:55 left in the 3rd. Exira-EHK answered again, with Alex Hansen scoring on a 3-yard run, making it 40-28 with 7:32 left in the 3rd. It looked like it could turn into a track meet but both defenses settled down, forcing back-to-back punts before Alt put the Wheelers ahead by 20 with a 5-yard touchdown run with 1:51 left in the 3rd quarter. Exira-EHK turned it over on downs their next two drives and Audubon turned it over on downs on their possession early in the 4th quarter. Evan Alt scored his seventh and final rushing touchdown with 5:00 left, scoring on an 11-yard run. That pushed the lead to 56-28 and sealed the game. The Spartans scored on a 51-yard pass from Quintin White to Alex Hansen but Colin Hartl broke off a 33-yard touchdown run while the Wheelers were trying to run clock late in the game. Hartl made a nice run, breaking a couple tackles before outracing the defense to the end zone.
Evan Alt finished the game with 20 carries for 281-yards and 7 touchdowns. Aaron Olsen didn’t have to do a lot of heavy lifting this week, finishing with 68-yards passing on 6-7 work and 8 carries for 52-yards. Austin Christensen was strong defensively with 12 tackles and Gabe Jensen had a terrific game at defensive end, recording 10 tackles and recovering a fumble.
The win improves the Wheelers to 2-1 as they head home this week for a big district matchup against St Edmond, who enters the game 2-1.
