The Kuemper Knights fell on the road to a bigger Bishop Heelan team. The game was back and forth, but Kuemper believes they let one slip away Friday night. Heelan kicked the scoring off by receiving the ball first and took their first offensive snap 56 yards for a touchdown to take an early 7-0 lead. Kuemper responded when DJ Vonahme found Ben Gerken in triple coverage on 4th down for a 33-yard touchdown pass to make the score 7-7. The score would remain tied going into the second quarter. Almost three minutes into the second quarter, Vonahme again found Gerken in the endzone for an eight-yard touchdown. The PAT was blocked, but the Knights held their first lead of the ball game, 13-7. Bishop Heelan regained the lead when they scored a 42-yard touchdown on third and 28 to make the score 14-13. As the second quarter was winding down, Vonahme threw this third touchdown pass of the first half when he found Will Simons in the endzone, and the Knights took a 19-14 lead into the locker rooms.
Coming out of the halftime break, both teams went scoreless in the third quarter, and Kuemper held onto a 19-14 lead going to the fourth. With about five minutes left in the fourth quarter, Bishop Heelan took the lead for good at 22-19. Kuemper had first and goal from the two-yard line with 25 seconds left, but they could not score and dropped to 0-1 with a 22-19 loss to Bishop Heelan.
DJ Vonahme passes for 196 yards and tossed three touchdown passes in the game. The Knights picked up 144 yards on the ground, led by Kent Sanders, who picked up 87 on 24 carries. Ben Gerken hauled in four catches for 55 yards and two touchdowns. Michael Kasperbauer also caught five passes and led the team in receiving yards with 62. The Knights are at home in week two against Underwood. Pre-game begins at 6:15, with kickoff at 7:00 on KCIM.
