Audubon was dominant in their season opener on Thursday, controlling the host Panthers. Audubon never trailed, earning double digit wins in both sets. The Wheelers controlled the game with their serve, not allowing Panorama to be in system often, then taking advantage of free balls Anna Larsen had a big service run in the 1st set that put them in control while Addie Hocker and Kaden Brannan-Sporrer served them to a lead in set 2, though Panorama tied the set at 5. Mattie Nielsen took over the next few points and Audubon didn’t look back.

Harlow Miller had 3 kills early in set one and the Wheelers led 6-2. A Mattie Nielsen kill extended it to 10-4 and then Nielsen made it 14-4. Anna Larsen put on a show from the service line, finishing with 6 aces, helping the Wheelers put away set 1, winning 25-10. Mattie Nielsen added an ace late, putting the Wheelers up 22-6 before Panorama scored three straight.

Harlow Miller scored the first point of set two and Audubon got an ace from Addie Hocker, taking a 3-0 lead. Panorama battled back to tie it a 5 but Mattie Nielsen had two big swings from the outside and Audubon led 7-5. Maddie Kasperbauer added back-to-back kills, extending the Wheelers lead to 11-8. Harlow Miller made it 14-8, then 17-10 after two more Miller kills. Panorama made another small rally late but Mattie Nielsen ended it with a pair of kills.

Mattie Nielsen and Harlow Miller both had 8 kills while Addie Hocker ended with 17 assists. Anna Larsen led the team with 5 digs and 6 aces. Addie Hocker and Kadence Brannan-Sporrer each had 2 aces.

The Wheelers opened the season 1-0 and played Coon Rapids Bayard next.

Audubon looked sharp coming off a convincing win against Panorama to open the triangular. The Wheelers built a 7-0 lead in the opening set, behind a pair of kills from Harlow Miller and first match jitters for Coon Rapids Bayard. Maddy Mason helped get the Crusaders going with a kill, cutting it to 7-2. Audubon took control again with Mattie Nielsen getting a kill, then picking up an ace serve. Maddie Kasperbauer stretched the lead to 14-5 with a kill for the Wheelers. Anna Hart scored the second of back-to-back points for Coon Rapids Bayard but Harlow Miller, Mattie Nielsen and Maddie Kasperbauer scored three straight for the Wheelers on nice sets from Addie Hocker. The Crusaders tried to cut into the lead late, pulling within 19-11 but Harlow Miller added a kill, then Mattie Nielsen took over earning a pair of kills and an ace as the Wheelers scored 5 of the last 8 points.

Audubon led 4-1 in set 2 but Lydia Hofbauer ignited Coon Rapids Bayard with a kill and Anna Hart had an ace. A Malia Clayburg block tied it at 4 and Coon Rapids Bayard took their first lead of the match at 5-4 moments later. Lydia Hofbauer added another kill, keeping the Crusaders up 9-6 but Mattie Nielsen and Audubon kept fighting, tying the set at 11 before taking the lead for good at 12-11. The Wheelers pulled away, scoring 9 of the next 10 points with Maddie Kasperbauer getting pair of kills. The match ended on an ace from Addie Hocker, her second during the match ending service run.

Harlow Miller led the Wheelers with 8 kills, Mattie Nielsen added 6 kills and 2 aces and Maddie Kasperbauer finished with 5 kills. Addie Hocker finished with 17 assists and 2 aces. Nielsen led the defense with 7 digs and Harlow Miller had 5 digs. Miller had a team high 2 blocks.

Malia Clayburg had 4 of the Crusades 7 kills while Ella Heithoff paced the setters with 4 assists. Anna Hart had a team high 4 digs and Malia Clayburg finished with 3 digs and a team high 2 blocks. Mya Downing and Aubrey Hofbauer both had an ace.

The Wheelers travel to the South Central Calhoun early bird Saturday, September 2nd. They sit 2-0.

Coon Rapids Bayard earned their first win of the season, moving to 1-1 with a hard fought win over host Panorama. The Crusaders showed good improvement in passing and serving. They finished with a 95.6% serve efficiency with 4 aces. Six different players finished with a kill with the defense getting the ball to the setter in better shape. The Crusaders battled in set one, earning a three point win before controlling set two a little more, winning by six.

Anna Hart had a team high 3 kills in the win with Malia Clayburg added a pair of kills. Ella Heithoff and Mya Downing both had 3 assists. Lydia Hofbauer paced the defense with 3 digs with Malia Clayburg with 2 digs. Shelbi Wiskus and Aubrey Hofbauer both had a block while Ella Heithoff had a team high 2 aces.

The Crusaders head to the Colfax-Mingo Tournament on Saturday.

East Sac opened the season in dominating fashion at the net and from the service line. The Raiders finished with 31 blocks and 25 kills in a sweep of GTRA. The Raiders came out sharp, dominating the opening set, winning 25-9. Their strength at the net held through a similar set two, winning 25-10. The Titans played better in third set, pushing the Raiders. The Raiders kept the Titans out of system enough with their tough serving to pull out the sweep. East Sac finished with 13 aces in the match, winning set three 25-17.

Kendall Quirk was dominant at the net with 11 blocks while Kate Vondrak made a smooth transition to setter, finishing with 12 assists to go with 7 kills and 6 blocks. She added 4 aces to her stat sheet. Kami Ross and Kate Schmitt each had 5 blocks. Kenna Meyer paced the Raiders with 8 kills, several from Vondark and Sidney Bieret, who added 6 assists. Meyer also had 3 aces as did Kami Ross.  Jen Aschinger had a strong night as libero with 8 digs and a pair of aces.

The East Sac County Raiders completed the sweep in a triangular at GTRA, beating Newell-Fonda 3-1. ESC was active at the nets, with three girls finishing with double-digit kills. The Raiders returned multiple players from a team that finished 15-15 last season. ESC jumped out quickly in the match, picking up a close set one win 25-20. Newell-Fonda responded with a set two win, 25-18. In an essential third set, the Raiders were able to show their dominance, picking up a 25-17 win. In a match-deciding set, four ESC won 25-20 to beat the Mustangs 3-1. 

Addisen Ahler, who finished third on the team last year in kills, recorded a team-high 14 against Newell-Fonda. Kenna Meyer and Kate Vondrak also recorded double-digit kills. Meyer finished with 12, and Vondrak recorded 14. The Raiders passed the ball well against the Mustangs, as Vondrak led the team with 24 assists. Sidney Bieret picked up double-digit assists with 15. ESC was active at the net on defense, recording 26 blocks in the game. 

 

With the win, the Raider’s record moves to 2-0 in the early season. ESC is back in action on Saturday in Harlan at the Cyclone Invite.
